Chapter 12 - THE DAY RYAN LOST EVERYTHING HE COULDN'T BUY

The investigation into Carter Maritime lasted six months.
Independent auditors uncovered unauthorized transfers, misleading board disclosures, and attempts to redirect trust assets through shell companies.
Ryan denied wrongdoing.
His mother defended him.
But the evidence continued to grow.
Eventually, Ryan resigned from his executive position under pressure from the board.
Several transactions became the subject of civil litigation and regulatory review.
The trust dispute proceeded through the courts.
Daniel did not celebrate.
He attended every hearing.
Answered questions.
Provided documents.
And focused on rebuilding the company.
One evening, Ryan appeared outside Daniel's apartment.
I was there when the doorbell rang.
Daniel opened it.
Ryan stood in the hallway.
He looked exhausted.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His eyes were red.
“Daniel.”
Daniel said nothing.
Ryan swallowed.
“I need your help.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
Daniel leaned on his cane.
“With what?”
Ryan looked down.
“Mother says you can stop the investigation.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“No.”
Ryan stared.
“I'm your brother.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“I made mistakes.”
“You committed fraud.”
Ryan flinched.
Daniel continued.
“You used Emma. You lied to Sophia. You tried to take what wasn't yours.”
Ryan's eyes filled.
“I was desperate.”
Daniel looked at him.
“So was I after the shooting.”
Silence.
Then Daniel said quietly:
“And you left me alone.”
Ryan lowered his head.
For a moment, I thought he might apologize.
Instead, he whispered:
“You always get to be the hero.”
Daniel stared.
Then shook his head.
“No, Ryan.”
His voice was calm.
“I just stopped being your excuse.”
He closed the door.
I looked at him.
“Are you okay?”
Daniel exhaled.
“No.”
I stepped closer.
He wrapped his arms around me.
We stood quietly.
May you like
Then he whispered:
“But I will be.”
