Chapter 7 - THE FAMILY THAT SOLD ME

My father called on a Tuesday morning.
He sounded exhausted.
“Emma, we need to talk.”
I almost hung up.
Then he said:
“Your brother is asking for you.”
I closed my eyes.
My younger brother, Noah, was twenty-one.
He had been diagnosed with a serious heart condition the previous year.
His treatment had nearly bankrupted our family.
I loved him.
I had taken extra shifts to help pay his bills.
But I had never agreed to become payment myself.
I visited Noah at the rehabilitation clinic.
He was sitting beside the window.
When he saw me, his face brightened.
“Em!”
I hugged him.
He held on tightly.
“Where have you been?”
I swallowed.
“Working through some things.”
He looked at me.
“Mom said you got married.”
My chest tightened.
“It's complicated.”
Noah frowned.
“To Ryan?”
I shook my head.
His expression changed.
“Then who?”
I told him.
Everything.
The ceremony.
The deception.
The money.
By the time I finished, Noah was crying.
“They used my treatment?”
I took his hand.
“This isn't your fault.”
He shook his head.
“I didn't know.”
“I know.”
He looked at me.
“Emma, I'd rather find another way to pay the bills than have you trapped.”
I began crying.
For the first time, someone in my family had chosen me over the debt.
My parents arrived an hour later.
My mother stopped when she saw me.
“Emma.”
I stood.
“Did you know Ryan wasn't the groom?”
She looked away.
“Your father thought—”
“Did you know?”
Silence.
Then she nodded.
My heart broke all over again.
I looked at my father.
“And you?”
He swallowed.
“Yes.”
I stared.
“You let me walk down that aisle.”
He began crying.
“We were desperate.”
“So was I.”
My voice rose.
“I was desperate to believe someone loved me.”
My mother reached toward me.
I stepped back.
“No.”
She froze.
“You don't get to touch me until you understand what you did.”
I left the clinic shaking.
Daniel was waiting outside because I'd asked him to drive me home.
He saw my face.
Didn't ask questions.
Didn't offer advice.
He simply opened the car door.
I sat inside.
Then began crying.
Daniel waited.
After several minutes, I whispered:
“I don't have a family anymore.”
He looked at me.
“You have Noah.”
I nodded.
“And you have people who will choose you without asking what you're worth.”
I looked at him.
“Like who?”
Daniel hesitated.
May you like
Then said:
“Like me.”
