Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE IN THE GARDEN

Three years later, Mave stood outside a newly opened animal rehabilitation center.

A wooden sign hung above the entrance.

THE SHADOW HOUSE.

Named after the dog her mother had rescued when Mave was a child.

The center specialized in helping animals with histories of fear, neglect, and mistreatment.

It offered veterinary care.

Behavioral rehabilitation.

Training support.

And education for owners.

Mave had helped build the program from the ground up.

She was proud of every inch of it.

Declan stood beside her.

He had completed the legal obligations arising from his cooperation and was rebuilding his life through lawful work.

He was no longer the man who controlled the waterfront through fear.

He was learning to live without needing to.

Brutus lived in a quiet home on the center's grounds under a carefully managed care plan.

He was older now.

Slower.

Still wary of strangers.

But comfortable with the people he knew.

Mave watched him resting beneath a tree.

“He looks happy.”

Declan smiled.

“He does.”

That evening, Declan asked Mave to walk with him into the garden.

White lights hung between the trees.

Flowers bloomed along the path.

Mave looked around.

“What's all this?”

Declan smiled nervously.

“Something I've been planning.”

He stopped beneath an old oak.

Then knelt.

Mave covered her mouth.

“Mave Dunlevy,” he said softly, “the first time I met you, I thought you were the only person in the room who wasn't afraid of me.”

Her eyes filled.

“But you weren't fearless.”

He smiled.

“You were simply brave enough to do what was right while you were afraid.”

Mave began crying.

“You taught me that strength isn't about making people obey.”

His voice broke.

“It's about making people feel safe.”

He opened a small box.

Inside was a simple diamond ring.

“I love you.”

He swallowed.

“Will you marry me?”

Mave laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Declan stood.

She threw her arms around him.

From the nearby enclosure, Brutus lifted his head.

His tail thumped against the grass.

Mave laughed.

“I think he approves.”

Declan smiled.

“He has excellent judgment.”

And beneath the garden lights, the man who had once terrified an entire city finally understood what peace felt like.
