Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO CHOSE A DIFFERENT LIFE

Anthony Rourke's arrest triggered a wave of investigations.
His financial network collapsed.
Patrick Voss was arrested.
Several former employees agreed to testify.
The evidence from Liam's video helped investigators reconstruct years of criminal activity.
Declan cooperated.
Fully.
Even when it meant admitting his own wrongdoing.
His attorneys warned him that cooperation would not erase his past.
Declan understood.
He had spent years believing power meant avoiding consequences.
Now he was beginning to understand that responsibility meant accepting them.
Mave watched the change cautiously.
She did not romanticize it.
A few good decisions could not erase years of harm.
But she believed people could choose to become different.
If they were willing to do the work.
One afternoon, Declan visited Brutus at Dr. Price's rehabilitation facility.
The dog was improving.
Slowly.
He remained reactive to certain sounds.
He still needed careful management.
But he had begun sleeping through the night.
Declan stood outside the enclosure.
Brutus lifted his head.
His tail moved once.
Declan smiled.
“Hey, old boy.”
Dr. Price approached.
“He's making progress.”
Declan nodded.
“Will he ever come home?”
She hesitated.
“Possibly. But home would need to be quiet, predictable, and carefully managed. He may never be suitable for public outings.”
Declan looked at Brutus.
“Then we'll give him what he needs.”
Mave stood beside him.
She smiled faintly.
“That sounds like love.”
Declan looked at her.
“Is that what it is?”
She nodded.
“Sometimes love means changing your life so someone else can feel safe.”
He stared at her.
Then said quietly:
“I'm trying.”
Mave looked up.
“I know.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Declan asked:
“Would you have dinner with me?”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Is this a business meeting?”
He smiled.
“No.”
“A thank-you?”
“No.”
He looked nervous.
“It's a date.”
Mave stared.
Then laughed softly.
“You're terrible at asking.”
“I've been told.”
She considered him.
Then smiled.
“One dinner.”
Declan exhaled.
“And Declan?”
“Yes?”
“No armed men at the table.”
May you like
He laughed.
“Agreed.”
