Chapter 9 - CLARA DID NOT MOVE BACK IN WITH ME

After everything, I assumed Clara would stay.
She did not.
Good.
Six months after the trial, she rented a townhouse.
Small garden.
Two bedrooms.
One for Sophie.
One for her.
I tried not to react.
Failed.
“You’re leaving?”
“Mom.”
“I understand that sounded ridiculous.”
She laughed.
“I need my own home.”
“Yes.”
“Not Dominic’s.”
“Not yours.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“And I’m going back to work.”
She returned to museum curation part-time.
Later full-time.
Childcare.
Therapy.
Budget.
Ordinary adulthood.
She loved it.
One afternoon, I visited and noticed three unpaid bills on the counter.
My instinct screamed:
Pay them.
I stopped.
Asked:
“Do you need help?”
She looked at me.
Then smiled.
“No.”
I nodded.
Growth was apparently humiliating for mothers too.
She handled them.
A year later, Clara began dating.
I hated him instantly.
Pure maternal tradition.
His name was Ethan Cole.
Pediatric physical therapist.
Divorced.
Quiet.
No private club membership.
No security detail.
When he met me, he looked terrified.
Appropriate.
I asked too many questions.
Clara kicked me under the table.
Also appropriate.
They dated slowly.
Ethan never tried to become Sophie’s father.
He became Ethan.
Then, years later, something more.
Dominic remained Sophie’s biological father.
Complicated.
Contained.
Real.

Clara did not need to erase one man to build a safer life with another.
