Chapter 8 - CLARA TESTIFIED

Clara testified for two days.
I did not attend the trial.
Not because I didn’t want to.
Because my presence could become theater.
She chose Rachel and a victim advocate to sit near her.
When she came home the second evening, she placed her shoes by the door and collapsed onto my couch.
“How was it?”
“Horrible.”
I sat beside her.
“Did you tell the truth?”
“Yes.”
“Then horrible can still be successful.”
She leaned against me.
The jury heard evidence from many sources.
Financial executives.
Federal agents.
Business owners.
Corrupt officers who cooperated.
Records.
Intercepts lawfully obtained under warrants signed by judges who had no personal conflict after my recusal.
Clara’s testimony addressed what she personally witnessed:
Cash envelopes.
Meetings.
Threats.
Dominic’s statements about officers.
His controls over her finances.
The jury was not asked to convict because he was a terrible husband.
Domestic abuse and organized financial crimes were different issues.
Evidence had to support each.
The jury convicted Dominic on multiple serious federal counts.
Not every count.
That mattered.
Some allegations failed.
Some evidence was insufficient.
Justice did not require a perfect score.
At sentencing, Clara submitted a victim-impact statement concerning the coercive and threatening conduct relevant to the proceedings.
She did not ask for vengeance.
She wrote:
For two years, Dominic convinced me that power meant having nowhere to go.
Then:
The first night I left, I learned power can also mean a door that opens.
I cried when she showed me afterward.
Dominic received a substantial federal sentence.
His companies entered restructuring.
Some legitimate businesses survived under new management.
Assets connected to criminal conduct were handled through lawful forfeiture where appropriate.
Employees did not all lose jobs because their owner committed crimes.
Good.
Sophie would not inherit a criminal empire.
She might inherit properly held legitimate assets later.
Through trusts.
Oversight.

No mythology.
