Chapter 5 - THE OFFICER ON MY PORCH WAS ON DOMINIC’S PAYROLL

Officer Daniel Kerr was arrested four months later.
Not because he was rude in my hallway.
Because financial records, recorded communications, and cooperating witnesses tied him to payments routed through a security company associated with Ward interests.
Captain Malloy was implicated too.
Councilman Lang resigned before charges were filed against him in a related corruption matter.
Not everyone Dominic claimed to “own” was corrupt.
That was important.
Most officers at the precinct had taken nothing.
Some were furious that a few colleagues made every badge suspect.
One detective, Elena Ruiz, became essential in Clara’s protection case.
Clara initially distrusted her.
Understandably.
Ruiz did not demand trust.
She earned pieces.
Showed identification every time.
Explained procedures.
Put decisions in writing.
Never said:
“You have to trust me.”
Good.
Then Dominic made another mistake.
He violated the protective order indirectly through a family intermediary.
His mother, Margaret Ward, arrived at Clara’s temporary apartment.
No invitation.
She stood outside holding baby clothes.
A camera recorded everything.
“Dominic misses you.”
Clara did not open the door.
“He’s your husband.”
Silence.
“Men under pressure make mistakes.”
Clara stayed behind the door.
Then Margaret said:
“You know what happens if he loses the company?”
No answer.
“Your baby loses everything.”
There it was.
Money as leash.
Clara finally spoke through the intercom.
“My child needs a safe father more than a rich one.”
Margaret went quiet.
Then:
“You sound like your mother.”
Clara smiled for the first time that week.
“Thank you.”
She ended the call.
Margaret left the clothes outside.
Clara donated them unopened.
Not punishment.
May you like
Boundary.
