Chapter 5 - THE MONEY DANIEL MOVED

My illness was not the only part of the marriage Daniel had used against me.

The money followed.

Two weeks before my attorney withdrew, Daniel transferred approximately $68,000 from our joint accounts.

His explanation:

Asset preservation.

From whom?

Me.

He claimed my “erratic health behavior” made him concerned I might spend irresponsibly.

Bank records showed something different.

$40,000 went into an account solely in his name.

$18,000 paid down his personal credit card.

The remainder covered attorney fees and household expenses.

Rachel filed for temporary financial relief.

The court did not magically give me every dollar back.

Instead, Judge Hanley ordered:

Disclosure.

An accounting.

Restrictions on further extraordinary transfers.

A temporary contribution toward my legal fees from marital funds.

That allowed Rachel to remain.

The financial issue also mattered to custody because Daniel had repeatedly told the court I was “unable to maintain stable housing.”

I nearly lost my apartment because he removed the money used for rent.

Then pointed at the instability he helped create.

Rachel called it:

“Manufactured evidence.”

The judge did not use that phrase.

But he clearly understood the concern.

My health condition had made me vulnerable.

Daniel turned vulnerability into strategy.

That hurt differently from infidelity or shouting.

He had used the fact that I was sick before anyone knew why.
