Chapter 8 - The Criminal Indictment

The family court victory was only the first blow.
The following week, the State Attorney’s Office unsealed a grand jury criminal indictment against Evelyn Miller:
Count 1: Felony Aggravated Domestic Battery of a Child under 13.
Count 2: Unlawful Restraint.
Count 3: Criminal Contempt of a Judicial Protective Order.
Faced with the undeniable 4K video evidence, forensic medical photography, and Hannah’s corroborating testimony, Evelyn’s criminal defense team realized a trial would result in a ten-year maximum sentence.
She was forced to enter a binding plea agreement:
Three years in state correctional facility, followed by five years of mandatory supervised probation.
Permanent entry onto the State Child Abuse and Neglect Registry.
A $50,000 criminal restitution fine paid directly into an educational trust fund for Maya.

On sentencing day, as bailiffs cuffed Evelyn’s wrists and led her through the double doors in county prison scrubs, she looked back at Kevin, weeping for him to save her.
Kevin sat in the gallery with his head in his hands, completely abandoned by his friends, his colleagues, and the community.
