Chapter 10 - Sunlight and New Growth

One year after that dark morning.
The warm summer breeze drifted through the apple orchard behind our cottage in Oakridge.
The backyard was filled with laughter and music. Hannah and Claire were sitting at the wooden picnic table, slicing fresh watermelon and chatting happily.
Maya ran across the lush green grass, wearing a bright yellow sundress, laughing as she chased our new golden retriever puppy, Barnaby.
Her hair had grown back.
It was no longer cut or hidden under a heavy blanket. It fell in soft, radiant, chestnut-brown curls past her shoulders, catching the golden afternoon sunlight like a crown of living light.
"Mommy! Look at Barnaby!" Maya cheered, scooping the puppy into her arms and running up the porch steps.
She leaned her head against my chest, her skin glowing with health, confidence, and pure joy.
"Mommy?" Maya asked softly, looking up into my eyes.
"Yes, my sweet girl?"
"Do you know what my favorite thing about my hair is?"
"What is it, sweetheart?"
She smiled—a wide, bright, fearless smile that lit up the entire world.
"It grew back stronger," Maya whispered proudly. "Just like us."
I pulled my daughter into my arms, burying my face in her soft, fragrant curls, feeling the steady, unbroken beat of her happy heart against mine.

The shadow that had tried to steal her light was gone forever. Ahead lay only open skies, boundless laughter, and a life where her crown would shine forever in the sun.
