Chapter 5 - The Parking Lot Ambush

The next morning, Nathan filed emergency petitions in the County Family Court:

Emergency Sole Legal and Physical Custody of Maya Miller.

An Emergency Six-Month Domestic Violence Restraining Order against Kevin Miller and Evelyn Miller.

A formal Petition for Absolute Divorce on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment and child endangerment.

At 3:00 PM, I drove to Maya’s elementary school to pick up her academic assignments for remote learning.

As I walked out toward my SUV in the visitor parking lot, a car abruptly swerved across the lane, blocking my vehicle’s path.

It was Kevin’s sedan.

The driver’s door flew open. Kevin marched toward me, followed immediately by Evelyn from the passenger side.

“Laurel!” Kevin yelled, his tie loosened, looking haggard and frantic. “My lawyer just received your divorce filing! Are you completely out of your mind?! You froze our joint accounts!”

“Stay back, Kevin,” I warned, pulling out my phone and holding the camera directly at his face. “You are currently violating a signed court protective order. You have five seconds to get back in your car.”

Evelyn pushed past her son, waving her manicured hands in the air, screaming for the entire school pickup line to hear:

“You ungrateful bitch! I built my son! Everything you have is because of my family! You stole my granddaughter! You think a judge is going to give a child to an unstable woman who tears families apart?!”

A loud siren whooped from the school entrance.

Officer Davies, who had been assigned to monitor the school zone following our report, pulled his patrol vehicle behind Kevin’s car, blocking them in.

“Kevin Miller and Evelyn Miller!” Officer Davies barked through his PA system. “Step away from the vehicle and place your hands on the hood! Now!”

Kevin froze, panic finally piercing his stubborn arrogance. “Officer, wait! This is a misunderstanding! We were just talking to my wife!”

“You were served with an emergency protective order at 11:00 AM today, Mr. Miller,” Officer Davies said, stepping out with his hand on his holster. “You are in direct criminal contempt of court.”

Two more squad cars arrived within ninety seconds.

Evelyn was handcuffed right there in the elementary school parking lot, screaming curses and weeping as parents and teachers watched in utter disgust.
