Chapter 8 - THE MONEY CAME BACK SLOWLY

There was no magical restoration.

Roberto’s company was nearly insolvent.

Some of Sofía’s money had already been spent.

The lender withdrew enforcement against me after the forged-guarantee dispute and investigation supported my lack of authorization.

Diego faced civil and potential criminal consequences related to the falsified authorization, ultimately resolving the supported offenses through counsel and restitution obligations.

Roberto sold equipment.

Teresa refinanced her own home.

Diego surrendered part of his share of marital assets.

Over three years, Sofía’s education account was restored.

Not because everyone suddenly became good.

Because orders, settlements, and payment plans exist.

The divorce property settlement sold our marital house.

Neither of us kept it.

That surprised Teresa.

She had assumed Diego would.

Instead, equity was divided according to the agreement after debts and adjustments.

I used my portion to put a down payment on a smaller three-bedroom house.

Nothing impressive.

A backyard.

Old kitchen.

One tree.

Sofía adored it.

“Is this ours?”

“The bank owns a depressing amount.”

She laughed.

Then:

“But can Grandma make us leave?”

“No.”

“Can Daddy?”

“No.”

“Can anyone?”

I thought.

“Life can change.”

“But no one gets to order us out because they’re angry.”

She smiled.

May you like

“That’s better.”
