Chapter 5 - TERESA’S REAL PLAN WASN’T ABOUT DISCIPLINE

The first custody hearing happened five days after Sofía’s birthday.

Diego wore the navy suit I bought him for our anniversary.

Teresa sat behind him in pearls.

Of course.

Diego’s attorney argued that the birthday incident was an isolated disagreement involving “traditional discipline.”

The judge asked:

“Did Mr. Ramirez know his mother previously used corporal punishment on Sofía?”

Diego hesitated.

“Yes.”

The courtroom went silent.

“And did he instruct her to stop?”

“I told her Verónica didn’t like it.”

Not:

It was wrong.

Not:

Do not hit my child.

Verónica didn’t like it.

As though my objection were a personality quirk.

The temporary order kept Sofía primarily with me pending further review.

Diego received structured parenting time.

Teresa received no unsupervised contact.

Outside court, Teresa hissed:

“You made my son look like a monster.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

“He answered questions.”

“You’ve poisoned Sofía against us.”

“You hit her.”

“She pushed Mateo!”

“And?”

“He’s older.”

“That doesn't make him owner of her birthday gift.”

Then Teresa said something revealing.

“Sofía has always gotten too much.”

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

“You treat her like the center of the universe.”

“She is my child.”

“You spent thirty-six thousand dollars preparing some college fund while Roberto’s company was dying.”

There.

No shame.

They believed taking Sofía’s money had been morally justified.

Because an adult man’s failing business mattered more than a little girl’s savings.

I said:

“You knew Diego took it.”

“Of course.”

“Did you know he used my signature?”

Her face changed.

Tiny.

Enough.

Rachel immediately touched my arm.

“Stop.”

Right.

Do not interrogate.

Do not contaminate.

We walked away.

But now I understood the hierarchy Teresa carried in her head.

Roberto.

Diego.

Mateo.

Then everyone else.

Men were investments.

Girls were expenses.

May you like

And Sofía had been punished for refusing to participate in the hierarchy.
