Chapter 9 - The Federal Gavel of Justice

Six months later, Courtroom 3B of the United States District Court for the District of Alaska was packed to maximum capacity for the final sentencing hearing.
Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Samantha and me.
Samantha looked radiant, healthy, and breathtakingly beautiful in an elegant cream cashmere dress, her skin glowing with vibrant vitality, her hand held securely in mine.
Rosalind, Valerie, and Christopher Harrington sat at the defense table in bright orange federal prison jumpsuits, their hands and feet bound in heavy iron chains. Their former arrogance and vanity had been utterly obliterated by six months in solitary detention.
Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling took the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.
"Rosalind Harrington, Valerie Harrington, Christopher Harrington," Judge Sterling declared, her voice echoing through the silent stone chamber like rolling thunder. "You engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous act of premeditated violence against a defenseless family member, leaving her barefoot in sub-zero arctic frost for personal financial greed."
Judge Sterling brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that shook the courtroom.
"Rosalind Harrington is hereby sentenced to twenty-five years at the Federal Correctional Institution, Dublin, without the possibility of early parole."
Rosalind collapsed forward onto the table, letting out a broken, hysterical wail as federal marshals secured her transport chains.
"Christopher Harrington is sentenced to eighteen years at the United States Penitentiary, Lompoc."
"Valerie Harrington is sentenced to twelve years at the Federal Correctional Institution, Victorville, followed by full financial forfeiture of all seized assets totaling $22 million to satisfy estate restitution."
Judge Sterling struck the gavel a second time.
"All testamentary claims of the defendants are declared permanently void ab initio, with sole, unchallengeable title to the Harrington Estate and Peak Horizon Resorts confirmed in the name of Samantha Harrington Vance."
As the federal marshals hauled the three weeping convicts through the heavy iron holding door forever, Samantha turned to me, her eyes shining with tears of pure, unadulterated peace.

"It’s over, Gareth," Samantha whispered.
"It's over, my love," I smiled, kissing her forehead. "Now we live."
