Chapter 5 - The Forty-Acre Winter Inheritance

While the tactical dragnet secured Valerie, Julian laid out the original, unalterable last will and testament of Samantha’s late father, Arthur Harrington.
For twenty years, Arthur Harrington had built Peak Horizon Resorts into a multi-million-dollar alpine empire spanning forty prime acres of untouched ski slopes, luxury chalets, and mineral springs.
"Look at the testamentary structure, Gareth," Julian explained, pointing to the original probate seals. "Arthur Harrington knew exactly who his wife and younger children were. Six months before he passed away, he had his estate restructured into an irrevocable generation-skipping trust."
"What were the explicit terms, Julian?"
"One hundred percent of the real estate, sixty percent of the voting shares, and the master estate title were deeded solely and exclusively to Samantha," Julian revealed. "Rosalind was granted a modest living annuity of $120,000 annually, conditional upon maintaining zero hostility toward Samantha. If Rosalind engaged in any criminal act against the primary heir, her annuity was instantly terminated and forfeited."
"And why was Rosalind so desperate to force Samantha’s signature tonight?"
Julian pulled up the financial forensic audit of the Harrington family accounts.
"Over the past eighteen months, Rosalind, Christopher, and Valerie have accumulated $22 million in defaulted high-yield private loans to an offshore predatory lending syndicate in Macau," Julian said. "The lenders gave them an ultimatum: deliver the master title to the forty-acre Harrington resort by 9:00 AM this morning, or their foreign assets would be liquidated and their names published."
I stared at the balance sheets, feeling the cold, ruthless finality settling into my chest.
