Chapter 6 - EVELYN BREAKS

Evelyn cooperated first.
Not out of remorse.
Fear.
Prosecutors presented enough evidence that her attorney became realistic.
She agreed to a proffer.
Her version:
Julian conceived the plan.
She merely “went along.”
Of course.
But then prosecutors showed her financial records.
Evelyn had transferred $86,000 from retirement accounts into JC Development.
She had emailed Julian:
Elena is sitting on three-quarters of a million while we lose everything. Stop asking and make her understand.
Another:
She needs to learn marriage means family assets serve family needs.
Then, two days before the injury:
If fear is what works, use fear.
Evelyn cried.
Not because innocent.
Because caught.
Yet during the second interview, something shifted.
She asked:
“Is Elena going to live?”
Marcus stared.
“She is already living.”
“I mean normally.”
He did not answer.
Evelyn began sobbing.
“I didn't think he would do that.”
Marcus asked:
“What did you think he would do?”
Silence.
Then:
“Scare her.”
“With boiling liquid?”
“I thought he would knock the pot over near her.”
There.
Admission.
She knew there would be a staged kitchen accident.
Maybe she did not know exact physical contact planned.
Still participation.
Still concealment after.
Still delay in emergency response.
She agreed to testify.
Julian called her a traitor.

Family loyalty ended where sentencing began.
