Chapter 8 - THE BLUEPRINT BENEATH THE FLOOR

The secret was hidden inside Margaret Carter's old house.

Not in the bank.

Not in a safe-deposit box.

Not in any of the financial documents Michael had been desperate to obtain.

Under the floorboards of her study.

Margaret had loved architecture.

She collected old blueprints and restored historic houses.

When I was little, she taught me how to identify load-bearing walls and recognize original woodwork.

One afternoon, she told me something I never forgot.

"If you ever need to find something important, Evelyn, look for the place where the building doesn't make sense."

At the time, I thought she was talking about renovation.

Now I wondered whether she'd been leaving a clue.

With my attorney and investigators coordinating a lawful search, we examined the house.

The study floor contained a narrow section that didn't match the original plan.

Beneath it, investigators recovered a sealed metal container.

Inside were documents.

Old photographs.

Property records.

And a letter addressed to me.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

My darling Evelyn,

If you are reading this, then the protections Catherine and I created may finally be needed.

Your mother left Chicago because she discovered that members of the Blackwood family were using property acquisitions to conceal unlawful transfers.

She feared that if she remained, your future would become a bargaining instrument.

She transferred her legitimate inheritance interests into a protected structure intended to benefit you when you were old enough to control your own affairs.

I promised to preserve those assets.

I also promised to tell you the truth when it was safe.

I am sorry I waited too long.

I stopped reading.

Tears blurred the page.

Margaret had known.

She'd known who my mother really was.

Known about the Blackwoods.

Known about the trust.

And she'd let me grow up believing I was an ordinary girl who inherited an unusually fortunate estate.

I continued.

The property records enclosed here identify the legitimate assets and the financial arrangements your mother questioned.

Do not sign any transfer simply because someone claims to be protecting your inheritance.

And remember: the money is not your identity.

You are Catherine's daughter.

That is enough.

I began crying.

Damien stood nearby.

He didn't touch me.

Didn't interrupt.

He simply waited.

When I finished, I looked at him.

"My mother tried to protect me."

He nodded.

"Yes."

"And Margaret too."

"Yes."

I stared at the documents.

Then noticed something.

A photograph of Catherine standing beside a man I recognized.

Not Damien's father.

Not Margaret.

A younger man with dark hair and a crooked smile.

On the back was written:

Jonathan Vale — Trust Counsel, 1999.

I frowned.

"Who is that?"

Damien looked at the photograph.

His expression changed.

"Jonathan Vale was my father's attorney."

My pulse accelerated.

"And?"

Damien swallowed.

"He disappeared twenty years ago."

I stared.

The hidden documents contained something far more dangerous than financial records.

They showed a connection between my mother, a missing attorney, and the people who controlled the Blackwood organization.

Then the investigator opened another envelope.

Inside was a signed memorandum.

It described a proposed transfer of protected assets through a fraudulent succession process.

The intended beneficiary was listed as:

MICHAEL CARTER.

My blood turned cold.

The date was eighteen months before the mountain attack.

May you like

My husband had been planning this long before I discovered his affair.
