Chapter 14 - THE HOUSE THAT BELONGED TO NO ONE ELSE

I purchased a small house near Lake Michigan the following summer.

Not with Damien's money.

Not with a gift from a powerful family.

With assets lawfully distributed from my trust after the legal disputes were resolved.

The house wasn't enormous.

Three bedrooms.

A garden.

A white porch.

And a kitchen with windows overlooking a maple tree.

I loved it immediately.

Catherine was learning to crawl.

She laughed whenever sunlight moved across the floor.

She loved music.

Hated peas.

And believed every object in the world was intended to be placed in her mouth.

Damien visited regularly.

Not because he controlled the property.

Because I invited him.

He helped assemble furniture.

Badly.

Brought books.

Too many.

And once attempted to prepare dinner.

The result was memorable.

For the wrong reasons.

I stood in the kitchen holding a smoking pan.

"Damien."

He looked embarrassed.

"Yes?"

"Did you know pasta can burn?"

He sighed.

"I do now."

I laughed until I cried.

Catherine giggled from her high chair.

Damien looked toward her.

"Your mother is very cruel."

I raised an eyebrow.

"Excuse me?"

He smiled.

"To inexperienced cooks."

I laughed harder.

For years, I'd associated powerful men with fear.

Michael had used money to control me.

Damien had entered my life surrounded by danger and authority.

But now he stood in my kitchen wearing an apron covered in flour.

And I understood that people could choose to live differently.

Over time, he became a trusted part of our family.

He told Catherine stories about my mother.

The books she loved.

The summers she spent by the lake.

The way she used to argue with his father about business.

He showed me photographs I'd never seen.

Catherine Blackwood as a girl.

My mother at seventeen.

My grandparents.

A family history that had been hidden from me for decades.

I began writing everything down.

Not because I wanted to reclaim some grand dynasty.

Because I wanted my daughter to know where she came from.

One evening, Damien sat beside me on the porch.

Catherine slept upstairs.

The lake glittered beneath the setting sun.

He looked toward the house.

"Are you happy?"

I considered the question.

"Yes."

He smiled.

"Good."

I looked at him.

"And you?"

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

"More than I expected."

I smiled.

"Even without the empire?"

He laughed softly.

"Especially without some parts of it."

A quiet moment passed.

Then he said, "Evelyn, I need to tell you something."

I looked up.

"What?"

"I've spent most of my adult life believing that if I controlled enough, nothing could hurt the people I cared about."

I remained silent.

He continued.

"Then I found you on that mountain."

His voice softened.

"And I realized power didn't make me invincible. It only made me responsible for what I chose to do."

I smiled faintly.

"Your aunt would've liked hearing that."

He looked down.

"I hope so."

I reached for his hand.

He looked surprised.

I squeezed it.

"Thank you for finding me."

His eyes filled.

Then he shook his head.

"You don't owe me anything for surviving."

I smiled.

"I know."

May you like

For the first time, I truly did.
