Chapter 6 - THE MAFIA BOSS WHO REMEMBERED A PROMISE

Damien Blackwood was not a good man by reputation.
He knew that.
He'd inherited a criminal organization at twenty-seven.
Spent the following decade expanding legitimate businesses while maintaining relationships with people who used fear and violence to achieve their goals.
He owned luxury properties.
Freight companies.
Construction firms.
And an impressive collection of enemies.
But there was one part of his life no one discussed.
Catherine Blackwood.
His aunt.
The woman who'd taught him to swim when he was eight.
Who'd brought him books during summers at the family estate.
Who once told him that being powerful meant nothing if people were afraid to tell him the truth.
He loved her.
Then she disappeared.
His father claimed Catherine had betrayed the family.
Damien was twelve.
He believed him.
Years later, he found letters suggesting Catherine had fled because she'd uncovered financial misconduct.
She'd tried to separate several properties from the family organization and place them in a protected trust.
Then she vanished under a new identity.
Damien began searching.
Not relentlessly every day.
Life intervened.
His father died.
The organization fractured.
He fought to retain control.
But every year, he returned to Catherine's disappearance.
Three weeks before the mountain incident, attorney Margaret Vale contacted his office.
She represented interests connected to Catherine's estate.
She had discovered that someone was attempting to obtain unauthorized control over the protected assets.
The beneficiary was a woman named Evelyn Carter.
Damien recognized the childhood photograph immediately.
Catherine's daughter.
The little girl he'd known for one summer before she disappeared.
Margaret Vale warned that Evelyn's husband was pressuring her to sign documents and had recently made suspicious inquiries about death benefits and trust succession.
Damien instructed his attorneys to contact the appropriate authorities.
When the lawyer learned Evelyn was traveling to a secluded mountain property, she reported the concern.
Then a message arrived from a private investigator hired by the trust's legal representatives.
Michael's vehicle had been seen leaving an isolated overlook during a severe storm.
Evelyn was not with him.
The investigator contacted emergency services.
Damien had already traveled to Colorado to meet the attorney.
He used his resources to assist a rescue operation requested through legitimate emergency coordination.
He did not personally command the helicopter crew.
But he accompanied the rescue team after identifying himself as a relative and receiving permission.
When they found Evelyn on the ledge, Damien recognized her immediately.
Her mother's eyes.
Her dark curls.
The tiny silver star necklace still visible beneath her torn coat.
And something inside him broke.
For twenty-six years, he'd wondered what happened to Catherine's daughter.
Now she was lying in the snow.
Pregnant.
Injured.
Abandoned by the man who'd promised to love her.
He remembered what Catherine once told him.
If you ever find someone in danger, don't ask whether helping them benefits you.
Help.
Damien sat beside Evelyn's hospital bed.
She was sleeping.
Her hand rested over her stomach.
He looked toward the window.
For years, he'd called his aunt naive.
Too idealistic.
Too trusting.
Now he realized she'd understood something he'd spent decades avoiding.
Power was not the ability to force people to obey.
It was the responsibility to choose what to do when someone couldn't protect themselves.
Damien closed his eyes.
Then made a decision.
Whatever happened to the Blackwood businesses, he would not allow Evelyn's life to become another transaction.
He would help expose the truth.
May you like
And he would accept that doing so might require him to confront the criminal world he'd spent years protecting.
