Chapter 6 - The Collapse of Sabrina’s Facade

================================================================================
While we were assembling our corporate strike team at Lake Norman, sixteen miles south in the affluent enclave of Myers Park, Sabrina Cole’s gilded life was collapsing in real time.
She had spent the night in a cheap motel near the interstate, shivering in her ruined trench coat, before taking a taxi back to her marital estate at dawn.
When she arrived, the twelve-foot wrought-iron security gates were locked tight.
Standing outside the gatehouse was a flatbed repossession truck and two private security guards wearing the crest of Cole Capital Security.
Sabrina jumped out of the cab, screaming frantically. “Open these gates! This is my house! I live here!”
Chief Security Officer Thomas stepped forward, holding a clipboard. “Mrs. Cole, pursuant to an emergency civil exclusion order filed by Mr. David Cole under North Carolina General Statutes Section 50-20, your residential license has been revoked. All access codes have been deleted from the central mainframe.”
“My clothes! My jewelry! My Birkin bags!” Sabrina shrieked, clawing at the iron bars. “Those are my personal effects!”
Two moving crew members carried three standard clear plastic storage bins through the side gate and set them on the asphalt curb.
Inside were basic sweaters, jeans, and sneakers.
“Every luxury item, every designer handbag, and all fine jewelry acquired during the last three calendar years were purchased with corporate venture capital subject to an active federal embezzlement investigation,” Thomas informed her with clinical indifference. “They have been seized as evidentiary assets by order of the court.”
At that exact moment, a sleek white Mercedes coupe pulled up to the curb.
Sabrina gasped in relief. “Grant! Thank God you're here! Take me to your condo downtown!”
The driver’s side door opened. Grant stepped out, but the polished, charismatic CEO in the tailored cashmere coat was gone. His hair was greasy and unkempt, his eyes bloodshot, his designer shirt wrinkled and stained with coffee.
“I don't have the condo, Sabrina,” Grant croaked, his voice cracking into a dry, pathetic rattle.
Sabrina froze. “What do you mean you don't have the condo?!”
“Claire’s lawyers filed an emergency lis pendens on the title at 7:30 AM,” Grant stammered, running shaking hands through his hair. “The building management deactivated my keycard. My corporate credit cards were declined at the gas station twenty minutes ago. The bank froze every personal checking account linked to Whitmore Development!”
Sabrina stared at him with mounting, venomous horror. The charming billionaire who had promised to sweep her into a world of private jets and lakeside villas was standing on the curb with empty pockets and ruined credit.
“You lied to me,” Sabrina whispered, her face twisting into pure disgust. “You told me you were worth sixty million dollars! You told me you owned the entire company!”
“I was going to own it once Claire signed the papers!” Grant screamed back, his face turning an ugly, mottled purple. “You were the one who insisted on moving into the lake house last night! If you had kept your mouth shut and stayed in your lane, we wouldn't have walked straight into David Cole’s trap!”
“You disgusting, penniless fraud!” Sabrina shrieked, lunging forward and slapping him hard across the cheek.
The crack echoed down the quiet suburban street.

As the two disgraced lovers stood on the pavement screaming insults at each other in front of the neighborhood, two unmarked black sedans from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation pulled around the corner.
