Chapter 5 - The Forensic Trail of Client Hospitality

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the storm had cleared, leaving Lake Norman bathed in crisp, golden autumn sunlight.
The great room of my villa had been transformed into an executive war room.
Marcus Vance sat at the long teak dining table surrounded by four senior forensic auditors from Deloitte and two corporate governance specialists. Three commercial scanners were running continuously, digitizing thousands of internal Whitmore Development invoices dating back three fiscal years.
I sat at the head of the table holding a hot cup of black coffee, reviewing the electronic ledger on my laptop screen.
“It’s worse than David Cole estimated, Claire,” Marcus said, sliding a newly printed financial analysis across the wood. “Grant wasn't just siphoning marketing funds for his mistresses. Over the past eighteen months, he established three separate shell entities in Delaware under the names Crestline Holdings, Blue Ridge Procurement, and Vanguard Materials LLC.”
“And the cash flow?” I asked.
“He routed $8.6 million in commercial construction loans through those entities,” the lead auditor explained. “He submitted falsified billing manifests for premium structural steel and foundation rebar that was never delivered to our Uptown Charlotte residential towers. He substituted low-grade, non-certified imported alloys on three active job sites, pocketing the $4.2 million margin discrepancy directly into private crypto wallets and offshore accounts in Nevis.”
My hands gripped the porcelain mug until my knuckles turned white.
“He compromised the structural integrity of inhabited high-rises to fund his ego?” I whispered, horror tightening in my chest.
“He did,” Marcus confirmed grimly. “Furthermore, he forged your digital architectural certification token on the municipal safety filings for the Trade Street Tower last month while you were on site in Charleston.”
I closed my eyes, taking a single, steadying breath.
Grant hadn't just been an unfaithful husband or a greedy executive. He was a dangerous, reckless fraud whose hubris could have caused catastrophic structural failures in the heart of the city.
“Does David Cole have his forensic package ready?” I asked.
“David filed an emergency petition for judicial receivership and corporate freeze in the Mecklenburg County Business Court forty-five minutes ago,” Marcus smiled with cold satisfaction. “The emergency shareholder assembly is convened for 2:00 PM today at corporate headquarters on Tryon Street.”
I stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling glass that framed the tranquil blue water of the lake.

“Call the structural engineering board,” I commanded. “I want emergency independent load-testing teams dispatched to every Whitmore job site before noon. And tell David Cole that when we walk into that boardroom, we take the entire company back.”
