Chapter 5 - THE POLICY CHANGE

The largest policy was discovered two months after Gavin’s arrest.

Not a hospital reimbursement plan.

A life-insurance rider.

Lucy’s name.

Gavin as beneficiary.

The amount made my hands shake.

He applied to increase it three weeks before the kitchen incident.

I asked Ortiz:

“Does that mean he planned to kill her?”

“No.”

I stared.

“How can you say no?”

“I said it doesn’t prove that.”

Important distinction.

Prosecutors were willing to argue intent based on the total evidence.

But nobody was going to turn fear into fact simply because the fact would fit.

I learned to appreciate that.

Even when it hurt.

Then investigators found emails between Gavin and an insurance broker.

One sentence mattered:

Need higher benefit before next event.

Next event.

Not next renewal.

Not next year.

Next event.

The broker claimed he thought Gavin meant a scheduled surgery.

Lucy had no surgery scheduled.

That email became central.

Gavin’s defense changed.

First:

Nothing happened.

Then:

Mara misunderstood.

Then:

The wire was manipulated.

Then:

He had insurance because he was a responsible father.

Then finally:

Mara caused Lucy’s symptoms and framed him.

That one almost broke me.

Susan repeated it publicly.

My own mother threw the newspaper away before I saw it.

Too late.

I had already read the headline.

MOTHER OR MONSTER? DEFENSE SUGGESTS FAMILY FEUD BEHIND CHILD-POISONING CASE.

I locked myself in the bathroom and cried.

Then Lucy knocked.

“Mom?”

I wiped my face.

“Yes?”

“Are you okay?”

I opened the door.

She saw immediately that I wasn't.

“I’m sad.”

“Because Dad says you did it?”

My heart stopped.

“Who told you?”

“A kid online.”

I deleted her tablet account that afternoon.

Not forever.

Temporarily.

Then we talked.

“I did not do those things.”

“I know.”

“How?”

Lucy looked at me like I had asked something stupid.

“Because when I got sick, you cried.”

Simple child logic.

Not legal evidence.

But it mattered to me.

Then she added:

“And Dad watched.”

May you like

I never forgot that.
