Chapter 4 - THE FATHER WHO ARRIVED TOO LATE

I don't remember crossing the ballroom.

I remember the faces turning.

The chandeliers blurring through tears.

The sound of my heels against the polished floor.

And Theo standing at the edge of the stage, waiting for me.

I climbed the steps.

He ran into my arms.

I held him so tightly he laughed.

“Mom, you're squishing me.”

“Good.”

He giggled.

“You're crying.”

“I know.”

“Was it bad?”

I pulled back.

“Theo, it was beautiful.”

His smile was the brightest thing I'd seen all evening.

The photographer captured us together.

No diamonds.

No designer gown.

Just a mother in an old black dress and a little boy holding a scholarship certificate.

Then Julian appeared.

“Theo!”

His voice was loud enough for the microphone to catch.

He climbed onto the stage, smiling.

“That's my boy!”

Theo's smile faded.

Julian opened his arms.

“Come here, champ.”

My son didn't move.

The entire room seemed to hold its breath.

Julian laughed awkwardly.

“Don't be shy.”

Theo looked at him.

“You didn't know I played piano.”

The microphone was still on.

Julian froze.

“Of course I knew.”

Theo frowned.

“What's my teacher's name?”

Julian's smile tightened.

“Theo, not now.”

“You said you knew.”

I reached for the microphone.

Not to silence Theo.

To spare him the pain of watching his father lie again.

But Margaret gently stepped forward and switched it off.

Julian leaned toward us.

“Eleanor, what is this?”

I looked at him.

“Our son won an award.”

“I can see that.”

“Then congratulate him.”

Julian turned to Theo.

“I'm proud of you.”

Theo looked down.

“Okay.”

One word.

No excitement.

No relief.

Just exhaustion.

Julian's jaw tightened.

“Can we discuss this privately?”

I nodded.

“After Theo finishes his photographs.”

“Eleanor—”

“He's earned this moment.”

Julian stared at me.

Then stepped back.

For the first time in our marriage, he had no idea how to make me obey.

Backstage, Theo sat beside me while a photographer prepared the award portraits.

He looked thoughtful.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Did I embarrass Dad?”

My heart broke.

“No, sweetheart.”

“He looked mad.”

I took his hands.

“You didn't do anything wrong.”

Theo nodded slowly.

“I didn't mean to make him feel bad.”

“I know.”

“I just wanted you to know I wrote it for you.”

I hugged him.

“I know that too.”

He rested his head against my shoulder.

“Can we go home after the pictures?”

I kissed his hair.

“Absolutely.”

But before we could leave, a woman appeared at the backstage entrance.

Chloe Reed.

Her smile was gone.

“Eleanor,” she said sharply. “We need to talk.”

I looked at Theo.

Then back at her.

“No. We don't.”

Chloe stepped closer.

“You deliberately humiliated Julian.”

I stared.

Then laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the accusation was so absurd.

“My son played a piano composition.”

“You know what I mean.”

I stood.

“No, Chloe. I really don't.”

Her face flushed.

“Julian has worked incredibly hard for this company. Tonight was important.”

I looked toward the ballroom.

“Apparently important enough to bring his mistress and her daughter while seating his wife and son at the back.”

Chloe's mouth opened.

Closed.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“You were supposed to understand the arrangement.”

I went still.

“What arrangement?”

Chloe's eyes widened.

She had said too much.

May you like

And suddenly I understood that the humiliation tonight had not been accidental.

It had been planned.
