Chapter 11 - THE GIRL WHO DIDN'T DESERVE THE BLAME

Theo asked to meet Sophie.

The request surprised me.

We were sitting at the kitchen table on a Sunday afternoon.

He was eating cereal.

I was sorting mail.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Can I meet her?”

I looked up.

“Sophie?”

He nodded.

“She made me a card.”

“I know.”

“I think she might be nice.”

I smiled.

“She seemed nice.”

Theo stirred his cereal.

“It's not her fault.”

My throat tightened.

“No, sweetheart. It isn't.”

He looked thoughtful.

“Maybe she's confused too.”

I reached across the table and squeezed his hand.

“That's very kind of you.”

With guidance from a family counselor, Chloe and I arranged a short meeting at a quiet community arts center.

Both children knew they could leave whenever they wanted.

There were no photographers.

No speeches.

No adults forcing them to hug.

Sophie arrived carrying a sketchbook.

Theo brought a small keyboard.

They stood awkwardly for a moment.

Then Sophie said, “I liked your song.”

Theo smiled.

“Thanks.”

“Did you write it yourself?”

“Yeah.”

“That's cool.”

He looked at her sketchbook.

“Do you draw?”

She nodded.

“Mostly animals.”

“Can you draw a dragon?”

Sophie's face lit up.

“Obviously.”

Within ten minutes, they were sitting on the floor designing a dragon that played piano.

I watched from across the room.

Chloe sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke for a while.

Then she whispered, “I'm sorry.”

I looked at her.

“For what?”

She swallowed.

“For the gala. For the things I said.”

I studied her.

“You knew he was married.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you chose to hurt me.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I did.”

I looked toward the children.

“I'm not ready to forgive you.”

Chloe nodded.

“I understand.”

“But I don't want them punished for what we adults did.”

She looked at Sophie.

“Neither do I.”

It wasn't friendship.

May you like

It wasn't reconciliation.

It was two mothers recognizing that their children deserved something better than the lies that had brought them together.
