Chapter 13 - THE FATHER WHO FINALLY LEARNED TO LISTEN

Julian began attending parenting counseling.
At first, I assumed it was another attempt to improve his image.
But over time, something changed.
He stopped sending expensive gifts.
Stopped making dramatic promises.
Started asking simple questions.
What music was Theo practicing?
What books did he like?
How had school gone?
Theo didn't immediately trust him.
I didn't expect him to.
Trust wasn't something Julian could buy with a new piano.
It had to be rebuilt through ordinary moments.
One afternoon, Julian attended Theo's small conservatory recital.
He arrived twenty minutes early.
Sat quietly.
Turned off his phone.
When Theo walked onto the stage, Julian didn't wave or call out.
He simply watched.
Afterward, he approached carefully.
“That was beautiful.”
Theo looked at him.
“Thanks.”
Julian swallowed.
“I know I missed a lot.”
Theo nodded.
“Yeah.”
“I'm sorry.”
Theo looked down.
Then asked, “Will you come next time?”
Julian took a breath.
“If you want me there, I'll come.”
Theo studied him.
“Okay.”
Julian nodded.
“Okay.”
It wasn't forgiveness.
Not yet.
But it was a beginning.
That evening, Theo sat beside me on the couch.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Dad stayed the whole time.”
I smiled.
“He did.”
Theo looked thoughtful.
“Maybe he'll keep coming.”
I kissed his forehead.
“I hope so.”
Then I added something important.
“And if he doesn't, you'll still be okay.”
Theo nodded.
“I know.”
He leaned against me.
“Because you'll be there.”
May you like
I hugged him.
“Always.”
