Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE MY FATHER NEVER SOLD

My parents had owned a cabin outside Asheville.

I had not visited since childhood.

After Mom died, I assumed it had been sold because taxes stopped appearing in the estate paperwork.

Rachel discovered otherwise.

The property belonged to a trust.

Beneficiary:

Me.

Trustee:

A law firm that had quietly paid taxes for seventeen years.

My father had protected it.

No direct connection to my name in ordinary property searches.

Exactly the kind of place Daniel could never find.

Luka drove.

Not because I needed a mafia escort.

Because he knew people connected to Vale might follow.

Grace slept in the back seat in a hospital-approved car seat.

Rachel came too.

I refused to go alone.

The cabin looked smaller than memory.

Dust.

Pine walls.

Old fireplace.

A photograph of my parents still sat on the mantel.

I cried when I saw it.

Then we searched.

Hours.

Nothing.

Until Luka noticed the kitchen table.

One leg was newer.

He turned it over.

Inside the hollow leg was a brass key.

My father.

Always practical.

The key opened a metal cabinet beneath the floorboards.

Inside:

Ledgers.

Patient lists.

Consent forms.

Photographs.

And fourteen sealed DNA envelopes.

Numbered M-1 through M-14.

Then separate envelopes.

M-15.

M-16.

M-17.

Rachel whispered:

“Jesus.”

My father's handwritten notebook explained.

M-17 was not one file.

It was the final phase.

The project moved beyond fertility fraud into intergenerational genetic tracking.

Children born from earlier unauthorized procedures were monitored.

Their descendants too.

Vale Biomedical wanted to prove certain inherited traits could be optimized across generations.

Intelligence.

Height.

Disease resistance.

Predispositions.

Human beings transformed into data points.

Luka found his name.

SUBJECT M-04B: LUKA SALVATORE MORETTI.

His face went pale.

My name appeared too.

CONTROL DESCENDANT: EVELYN BENNETT.

Control descendant?

My father was not part of M-17 genetically.

He had inserted my records into the system as a false control to identify manipulated data.

That was how Vale eventually discovered he was stealing evidence.

Then we found Daniel.

RECIPIENT ACCESS CONTACT: DANIEL CARTER.

My husband was documented like staff.

I felt nothing anymore.

Then Rachel found Grace.

Not by name.

Pregnancy code.

M-17-R3

The implantation plan.

Three possible paternal samples.

Sample A:

D. CARTER

Daniel.

Sample B:

L. MORETTI

Luka.

My hands started shaking.

Third:

SEALED — EXECUTIVE AUTHORIZATION

No name.

The final DNA envelope probably contained it.

Daniel’s warning.

Don't open it.

Luka looked at me.

“Your choice.”

Rachel agreed.

“We can preserve it sealed.”

I stared at the envelope.

Everything in me wanted truth.

Everything in me feared it.

Then we heard tires outside.

Luka moved instantly.

“Stay here.”

He checked the window.

Black SUV.

Two men.

Then another car.

Not Vale security.

Police.

Rachel had arranged local law enforcement backup without telling us.

Good woman.

The men in the SUV saw police and left.

No confrontation.

No guns.

No drama.

Just proof that someone knew we had found the archive.

We transferred everything into evidence custody through federal investigators.

The next morning, Arthur Vale died.

Heart attack.

At seventy-eight.

Convenient timing.

But natural, according to doctors.

His son Preston took control.

And within hours, Vale Biomedical publicly denied M-17 ever existed.

Then Preston filed a lawsuit against me.

Claiming my father had stolen proprietary research.

The arrogance almost impressed me.

May you like

He had just admitted the records were real enough to steal.
