Chapter 7 - LEGAL ACTION IS SLOWER THAN ANGER

Grandma wanted Patricia removed from the family trust immediately.

Richard explained she did not control it anyway.

What could be changed were future roles.

Authorizations.

Distribution procedures.

No one person would again act as informal intermediary for another beneficiary.

Direct verification became mandatory.

The civil case over the missing money moved forward.

Patricia ultimately agreed to:

Repay a substantial portion through sale of investments.

Apply proceeds from refinancing.

Transfer certain nonessential assets.

Cover some legal and accounting costs.

The exact recovery did not happen in one day.

It took more than a year.

There were also potential criminal issues around forged acknowledgments and diverted funds.

Those were handled by counsel and authorities, not by Grandma ordering punishment at Thanksgiving.

That mattered to me.

I wanted accountability that survived emotion.

Not a family sentence issued between turkey and pie.
