Chapter 9 - THE SYNDICATE BOSS'S CONFESSION

Matteo invited Ren to his family's old estate outside Boston.
She agreed only after several weeks of working together and after confirming she could leave whenever she wished.
The house stood on a hill overlooking the water.
Stone walls.
Tall windows.
A garden that had once been beautiful.
Ren walked beside him through the grounds.
“It's quiet.”
Matteo nodded.
“Too quiet sometimes.”
They stopped near an old fountain.
Ren looked at him.
“Why did you really come to my wedding?”
Matteo hesitated.
She continued.
“You could have sent the documents to my attorney. You could have called me.”
He looked toward the water.
“I received information that Derek intended to complete the transfer immediately after the ceremony.”
Ren frowned.
“Why would the wedding matter?”
“The forged authorization was designed to appear connected to your change in marital status. It didn't automatically make the transfer valid, but it was part of the deception.”
She nodded slowly.
“And you wanted to stop it.”
“Yes.”
Ren studied him.
“Was that the only reason?”
Matteo looked at her.
“No.”
She waited.
He took a breath.
“Your grandfather asked me to protect the truth if anything happened to him.”
Ren felt tears rise.
“He knew?”
“He suspected people would come after the trust.”
Matteo continued.
“I promised him I would help if his family ever needed it.”
Ren looked away.
For years, she'd thought her grandfather's death had ended his protection.
Now she understood he'd left people behind who remembered him.
She turned back.
“Why didn't you contact us earlier?”
Matteo's expression darkened.
“Because I was afraid my involvement would put you in danger.”
Ren nodded.
“And now?”
He looked at her.
“Now I think silence would be worse.”
They stood together beside the fountain.
Then Ren asked:
“Do you ever regret the life you've lived?”
Matteo looked surprised.
She continued.
“People are afraid of you.”
He nodded.
“They have reasons.”
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then:
“Yes.”
Ren looked at him.
He continued.
“I inherited a criminal organization. I made choices I'm not proud of. Some I can't undo.”
She listened.
“But I'm trying to change what I can.”
Ren studied him.
“Then don't tell me. Show me.”
Matteo nodded.
“Fair.”
And for the first time, Ren saw something behind the reputation.
Not innocence.
May you like
Not redemption already earned.
But a man who understood that change required more than promises.
