Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED THE EMPIRE

The trust's assets were substantial.
More than Ren had ever imagined.
The waterfront parcels had appreciated dramatically.
The old shipyard alone was worth millions.
But Ren didn't want to sell everything.
She wanted to restore it.
She began developing a plan to convert part of the shipyard into a maritime heritage center.
The project would preserve historic buildings, create apprenticeships, and provide public access to the waterfront.
Investors expressed interest.
Some wanted luxury apartments.
Others wanted private offices.
Ren refused proposals that would erase the site's history.
Matteo offered financial support.
Ren declined.
He looked amused.
“You enjoy telling me no.”
She smiled.
“I'm getting good at it.”
He nodded.
“Then tell me what you need.”
Ren considered.
“Introductions to people who understand historic preservation. Nothing more.”
Matteo smiled.
“That I can do.”
Their friendship deepened.
They shared dinners.
Walks.
Long conversations.
Matteo never pressured her.
He respected her decisions.
One evening, Ren asked:
“Why haven't you asked me out?”
Matteo nearly dropped his glass.
She laughed.
He looked at her.
“Because your life has been complicated enough.”
Ren smiled.
“And?”
“And because I wanted you to know you could say no.”
She studied him.
Then she said:
“What if I said yes?”
Matteo went still.
Ren smiled.
“I'm asking you to dinner, Matteo.”
He laughed.
For the first time, she heard him laugh without restraint.
May you like
“Then yes,” he said.
“Definitely yes.”
