Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM WHERE VALERIE SPOKE
Federal agents reached the Queens warehouse shortly before noon.
The upper floors had been converted into temporary offices.
Board members believed they were attending an emergency meeting concerning Andrew’s mental health and the company’s financial survival.
Sophia appeared by video from a room inside the building.
She told directors that Andrew had abducted Valerie, attacked his wife, and become obsessed with the fantasy that Elena was alive.
A psychiatrist presented the prepared report.
Cole stood near a private elevator holding Elena at gunpoint.
The board received documents appointing Sophia temporary chief executive and guardian of Valerie’s shares.
Several members hesitated.
Others had already been paid.
The biometric confirmation remained missing.
Then Andrew entered the boardroom.
Federal agents waited outside the visible camera range.
Valerie was not with him.
Sophia’s image froze.
“You came alone.”
“You wanted my signature.”
“I want my daughter.”
“She is safe.”
“No.”
“She is finally safe from you.”
Sophia turned toward the directors.
“This is the instability I warned you about.”
Andrew placed the red folder on the conference table.
“Then let the board review the evidence.”
The company attorney reached for it.
A paid director stopped him.
Sophia ordered security to remove Andrew.
No one moved.
Most warehouse guards had already been detained.
Andrew connected a drive to the presentation system.
Elena’s video filled the screen.
She described the fake housing projects, shell companies, and attack on her boat.
She named Andrew’s father.
Then Sophia.
Board members began whispering.
Sophia shouted that the recording was fabricated.
Andrew played hospital photographs of Valerie’s injuries.
Then audio from the bedroom.
Sophia’s voice.
If you ever mention your mother again, you won’t be eating dinner tonight.
The room went silent.
“You cannot control company votes after abusing the beneficiary,” Andrew said.
Sophia’s composure collapsed.
She ended the video connection.
Agents traced the internal signal to the basement loading level.
Sophia, Cole, and Elena were moving toward a freight truck.
Andrew left the boardroom.
The federal commander ordered him to remain behind.
He ignored the instruction.
At the loading bay, Cole dragged Elena toward the vehicle.
Sophia carried a laptop containing the transfer authorization.
“Stop!” Andrew shouted.
Cole turned the gun toward him.
Elena drove her shoulder backward into Cole’s chest.
The weapon fired into the ceiling.
Andrew tackled him.
Sophia ran toward the truck.
A second figure stepped from behind a concrete pillar.
Valerie.
Andrew’s heart stopped.
She had not remained in the secure vehicle.
A corrupt family driver had lured her away by claiming Andrew needed her.
The driver delivered her to Sophia minutes earlier.
Valerie stood shaking, but she held Sophia’s laptop against her chest.
“I took it,” she said.
Sophia moved toward her.
“Give that to me.”
“No.”
“You are a disobedient little girl.”
Valerie flinched.
Then Elena spoke.
“Valerie, look at me.”
The child turned.
For the first time, mother and daughter faced each other without glass, photographs, or stories between them.
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“You never have to obey someone who is hurting you.”
Sophia lunged.
Valerie threw the laptop across the floor.
It shattered against a forklift.
Federal agents entered.
Sophia reached into her purse.
Andrew thought she was going for a weapon.
Instead, she pulled out a small remote.
Cole shouted, “Don’t!”
She pressed the button.
An explosion shook the warehouse.
Flames erupted near the records room.
Sophia had planted accelerants to destroy evidence if the vote failed.
Smoke filled the loading level.
A metal beam fell across the exit.
Agents carried Valerie toward safety.
Andrew pulled Elena behind a concrete barrier.
Cole fled into the fire.
Sophia ran toward the river-side loading platform.
The warehouse sprinkler system failed.
It had been disabled.
Firefighters approached from the street, but burning debris blocked the route.
Elena knew another exit.
During her investigation, she discovered an old conveyor tunnel leading to the pier.
She guided Andrew and the agents through thick smoke.
Outside, Sophia climbed onto a speedboat.
Cole appeared behind her, burned and bleeding.
He demanded she take him.
She pushed him into the water and started the engine.
That single act ended his loyalty.
Cole grabbed the dock and shouted toward federal agents.
“She ordered the boat attack!”
Sophia froze.
Cole pointed at her.
“She paid us to hit Elena’s sailboat.”
“She ordered Valerie punished until the child agreed to accuse Andrew.”
“She planned to kill him after the trust transfer.”
Sophia accelerated.
A Coast Guard craft blocked the river channel.
She tried to turn.
The boat struck a barrier and spun sideways.
Agents arrested her before she reached the opposite dock.
Cole survived and immediately requested a cooperation agreement.
The warehouse fire destroyed part of the building, but the financial data had already been copied to federal servers.
Sophia had lost.
