Chapter 9 - ONE YEAR AFTER THE WEDDING

Exactly one year after the night Sofia arrived at my door, she asked Alexander and me to meet her at the condo.

On the dining table sat three boxes.

She handed one to me.

One to Alexander.

Kept one.

Inside mine was a small piece of white satin beneath glass.

The wedding dress.

Embroidered underneath:

I CAME HOME.

Alexander's read:

YOU CAME BACK.

Sofia's:

I STAYED.

I cried immediately.

Alexander lasted perhaps eight seconds.

Then lost the battle.

Sofia laughed.

"Colonel Brooks crying?"

"Retired Colonel Brooks."

"Still embarrassing."

He pulled her into his arms.

This time she didn't flinch.

That was the gift.

Not the frame.

Not the condo.

That.

---

Sofia never rushed into another relationship.

For nearly three years, she didn't date seriously.

Then she met Daniel Cho.

Not a billionaire.

Not a soldier.

Not a savior.

An elementary-school music teacher with terrible cooking skills and an elderly beagle named Mozart.

When Sofia told us about him, Alexander immediately asked:

"Full name?"

She stared.

"No."

"I just—"

"No background investigation."

"I wasn't—"

"Dad."

"Fine."

Two weeks later Daniel met him.

Alexander behaved.

Mostly.

---

The first time Daniel accidentally touched Sofia's hair from behind, she froze.

He noticed.

Stepped away.

"Sorry."

No defensiveness.

No demand for explanation.

Later Sofia told him why.

Daniel asked:

"What helps?"

Not:

"Why aren't you over it?"

That difference mattered.

Years earlier, Sofia believed love meant tolerating discomfort to keep someone else happy.

Now she understood love could also sound like:

What helps?
