Chapter 5 - THE SEVEN WOMEN

Police identified all six women who entered with Carmen.

Not all were equally involved.

That mattered.

Two had actively restrained Sofia.

One had taken her phone.

One admitted she stood near the door.

Another claimed she believed it was merely a family argument until Carmen struck Sofia.

The sixth woman changed everything.

Her name was Lucia Herrera.

Carmen's younger sister.

She asked for an attorney.

Then she asked for Detective Reed.

"I want to tell you about the other brides."

Other brides.

Two words.

Another investigation opened.

---

Carmen had three sons.

Javier was youngest.

Her eldest, Tomas, divorced six years earlier.

His ex-wife, Nicole, moved to Colorado and never spoke publicly about the family.

Middle son Rafael had been married once.

His wife, Paige, filed for annulment after nine weeks.

Both women had signed property agreements benefiting Robles-controlled companies shortly before their marriages ended.

Coincidence?

Maybe.

Then detectives contacted them.

Nicole cried on the phone.

Paige said:

"I've been waiting eight years for somebody to ask."

---

The pattern was not identical.

That made it more believable.

No secret ritual.

No cartoon conspiracy.

Pressure.

Isolation.

Financial demands.

Threats.

Humiliation.

Family members convincing young wives that resistance meant disrespect.

Nicole had surrendered $90,000 from a premarital investment account.

Paige had transferred ownership of a rental property.

Neither reported physical violence.

Both described Carmen.

Both described being surrounded by female relatives and told that marriage required financial loyalty.

Lucia had witnessed portions of both confrontations.

Why speak now?

"Because Sofia was bleeding."

She looked at Detective Reed.

"I kept telling myself Carmen was just controlling."

"And now?"

"Now I know what I've been helping normalize."

---

Lucia testified to the grand jury.

So did Noah.

So did Sofia.

That was the hardest.

Before entering, Sofia vomited in a courthouse restroom.

Then washed her face.

Her bruises were turning yellow.

Her lip was healing.

She looked at herself in the mirror.

"I look terrible."

I stood behind her.

"You look like yourself."

"No, I don't."

"Then who?"

She thought.

"Someone I don't know yet."

That answer stayed with me.

---

The indictments came three weeks later.

Carmen faced serious charges stemming from the alleged assault, coercion, unlawful restraint, and property scheme.

Several relatives faced charges according to their individual conduct.

Javier faced conspiracy-related allegations and charges connected to the attempt to obtain Sofia's property and his role in facilitating what occurred.

The exact legal fight would take months.

But one immediate matter didn't.

Sofia filed for annulment and, alternatively, divorce.

Javier contested it.

Not because he wanted the marriage.

Because he wanted leverage.

He demanded settlement.

Sofia's answer was simple:

"No."
