Chapter 1 - THE LAST VISIT

For five years, Elena Cole had imagined her final day.
She imagined fear.
She imagined anger.
She imagined standing in that execution chamber and wondering how the world could have gotten everything so wrong.
But she had never imagined this.
Her daughter.
Chloe.
Eight years old.
Standing inches away from her.
Whispering words that made Elena forget, for one impossible second, that she was moments away from death.
“Mommy…”
Chloe’s small fingers tightened around Elena’s prison sleeve.
“I know who really did it.”
Everything inside Elena stopped.
The guards watching from behind the glass remained still.
They had heard nothing.
But they saw Elena’s expression change.
Five years of sadness disappeared.
Not because she was happy.
Because hope had returned.
“What did you say?” Elena whispered.
Chloe looked around.
Her eyes moved toward the cameras mounted in the corner.
Then toward the guards.
Then back to her mother.
“He told me not to tell anyone.”
Elena’s heart started racing.
“Who?”
Chloe swallowed.
“The man who came to our house after Daddy died.”
A cold feeling moved through Elena’s body.
The murder.
The reason she was sitting here.
The reason the state planned to end her life before sunset.
Five years earlier, Elena’s husband, Daniel Cole, had been found dead inside their home.
The investigation lasted less than two weeks.
The prosecution's story was simple.
Elena and Daniel argued.
Elena became angry.
Elena killed him.
Then she tried to cover it up.
The evidence looked devastating.
Her fingerprints were on the knife.
Daniel’s blood was found on her clothing.
A neighbor claimed she saw Elena leaving the house.
The jury convicted her in less than three hours.
But Elena had always known one thing.
She did not kill her husband.
And now her daughter was saying someone else knew the truth.
“Chloe,” Elena whispered carefully, “who told you not to tell?”
The little girl looked down.
“Mr. Parker.”
The name meant nothing.
Until Elena felt something shift.
“Parker?”
Chloe nodded.
“He said Mommy was dangerous.”
Elena’s breathing became shallow.
“Why were you with him?”
Chloe’s eyes filled slightly.
“After you went away, he came around a lot.”
“Who let him?”
The girl hesitated.
Then:
“Grandma.”
Elena froze.
Her own mother.
Margaret Cole.
The woman who testified against her.
The woman who told the jury:
“My daughter always had anger problems.”
The woman who said Elena had been unstable.
The woman who helped take Chloe away from her.
Elena leaned closer.
“Chloe, listen to me.”
Her voice trembled.
“You did nothing wrong.”
“I know.”
“No matter what anyone told you.”
“I know.”
The maturity in Chloe’s voice terrified her.
Children were not supposed to sound like witnesses.
They were supposed to sound like children.
Then Chloe whispered:
“I have something.”
Elena stared.
“What?”
“Daddy left it.”
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“What did he leave?”
Chloe reached into her small backpack.
A guard immediately stepped forward.
“Stop.”
Chloe froze.
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“Children aren't allowed to pass objects without inspection.”
Elena looked at the guard.
“Please.”
The guard hesitated.
Then removed the item.
A small folded piece of paper.
Nothing more.
He checked it.
Then handed it to Elena.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
There were only four words.
Written in Daniel’s handwriting.
SHE DIDN’T DO IT.
Elena stopped breathing.
The room went silent.
Because everyone saw it.
Even the guards.
Even the social worker.
Even Warden Mitchell, watching from the observation room.
For five years, Elena Cole had begged people to believe her.
Now, eight-year-old Chloe had brought the first piece of evidence suggesting she had been telling the truth all along.
But then Chloe whispered one more sentence.
May you like
A sentence that changed everything.
“He hid the rest before they found him.”
