Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT SOPHIA FOUGHT BACK

The attack came during a thunderstorm.
Sophia was in her bedroom.
Rebecca sat beside her, helping her practice identifying objects by touch.
On the table lay a training knife.
It was a blunt, lightweight prop used to teach recognition and safe distancing.
Rebecca had explained that the goal was never to fight someone holding a blade.
The goal was to recognize danger, move away, and call for help.
Sophia nodded.
Then asked:
“What if someone comes into my room?”
Rebecca softened.
“Then we practice getting to the door.”
They rehearsed.
Sophia found the wall.
Followed it.
Located the handle.
Called for help.
Again.
And again.
Then the lights went out.
Rebecca froze.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Heavy.
Fast.
The door handle moved.
Rebecca stood.
“Sophia, behind me.”
The door opened.
Dario stepped inside.
His face was pale.
His eyes wild.
“You should have left,” he said.
Rebecca moved between him and the child.
“Get out.”
Dario reached toward his jacket.
Rebecca grabbed the training knife from the table—not to attack, but to keep it away from Sophia as she moved.
The child raised her hands in the protective position they'd practiced.
Then the bedroom door slammed.
A second later, it burst inward.
Kalin entered with a gun.
He saw Rebecca holding the silver prop.
Saw Sophia behind her.
And misunderstood everything.
“GET AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER!”
Rebecca froze.
Sophia screamed.
“Daddy, don't shoot—she's the only one who listened!”
Kalin stopped.
His eyes moved from Rebecca to Dario.
Then to Sophia.
The girl stood trembling.
But she was upright.
Her hands were raised.
Her feet planted.
She wasn't helpless.
She was trying to protect herself.
***
Dario lunged toward the doorway.
Kalin's security team intercepted him.
The struggle lasted seconds.
Then Dario was restrained.
Kalin lowered his weapon.
His hands shook.
Rebecca set the training knife on the table.
Sophia began crying.
“Daddy?”
Kalin crossed the room.
He knelt.
“I'm here.”
She reached for him.
He held her.
Then whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
Sophia cried harder.
“I told you.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“You didn't listen.”
His voice broke.
“I know.”
***
Rebecca stood near the wall.
Her heart hammered.
Kalin looked up at her.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
Then he said:
“You were protecting her.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“And I almost—”
He stopped.
His face crumpled.
Rebecca looked away.
Because the truth had finally reached him.

His daughter had never needed to be treated like glass.
She had needed someone to believe she could survive.
