Chapter 5 - THE EXPLOSION THAT WASN’T AN ACCIDENT

Rebecca spent the night reviewing everything she remembered.
Three years earlier, Elena Marquez had disappeared from a protected location.
The operation had been compromised.
Two officers died.
And Rebecca's career ended.
Six months later, Bella Caruso was killed in an explosion outside a private charity event.
The official explanation blamed a rival criminal organization.
But Sophia's memory suggested something else.
Someone had expected an attack.
Someone had known a child might be nearby.
And someone had been willing to proceed anyway.

The next morning, Rebecca requested a meeting with Kalin.
Giovanni looked surprised.
“About what?”
“His daughter.”
The old adviser studied her.
Then nodded.
“I'll ask.”

Kalin received her in his office.
He sat behind a large desk.
Rebecca remained standing.
“Mr. Caruso, Sophia needs more independence.”
Kalin's expression hardened.
“She needs safety.”
“She needs both.”
He stared.
Rebecca continued.
“She can learn to navigate the house with appropriate training. She can make choices. She can have friends.”
Kalin looked away.
“You don't understand what happened to her.”
Rebecca swallowed.
“I understand that trauma doesn't disappear when you lock every door.”
Silence.
Kalin looked back.
“Careful.”
Rebecca met his eyes.
“Your daughter is afraid of one of your guards.”
His expression changed.
“Who?”
“Dario.”
Kalin stood.
“What did he do?”
Rebecca explained.
The grabbing.
The insults.
The threats.
Kalin's face darkened.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
Rebecca answered quietly.
“Because everyone is afraid of you.”
The words struck harder than she expected.
Kalin stared.
Then sat down slowly.
For a moment, he looked less like a mafia boss and more like a father who had failed to understand his own child.

That evening, Kalin spoke privately with Sophia.
He sat beside her bed.
“Sweetheart.”
She turned toward him.
“Yes, Daddy?”
His breath caught.
She had answered.
Without hesitation.
He swallowed.
“Has Dario been unkind to you?”
Sophia's hands tightened around her bear.
“Yes.”
Kalin closed his eyes.
“I'm sorry.”
She looked toward his voice.
“Are you angry?”
He swallowed.
“Yes.”
She flinched.
He noticed.
Then said quickly:
“Not at you.”
Sophia remained still.
Kalin took a breath.
“I'm angry because I should have listened sooner.”
The girl began crying.
He held out his arms.
She moved toward him.

And for the first time in years, Kalin understood that protecting his daughter meant listening to her.
Not controlling every moment of her life.
