Chapter 3 - THE FIRST LESSON

Rachel began with one rule.

“You never have to prove you're brave by staying near someone who frightens you.”

Sophia sat cross-legged on her bedroom carpet.

Her stuffed bear rested beside her.

Rachel continued.

“If someone grabs you, your first goal is to get away and call for help.”

Sophia nodded.

“But what if I can't?”

“Then we practice making space.”

Rachel demonstrated a gentle wrist-release movement using Sophia's permission and careful verbal instructions.

They practiced slowly.

Without force.

Without fear.

When Sophia successfully pulled her hand free, she laughed.

The sound startled Rachel.

It was bright.

Unrestrained.

Alive.

That evening, Kalin heard laughter from the hallway.

He stopped outside Sophia's room.

For a moment, he thought he'd imagined it.

Then it came again.

His daughter's laughter.

He stepped toward the door.

Inside, Rachel was telling a ridiculous story about a dog that had stolen a wedding cake.

Sophia was laughing so hard she could barely speak.

Kalin stood frozen.

Three years.

Three years of silence.

Three years of doctors explaining trauma.

Three years of watching his daughter retreat into herself.

And now a maid had made her laugh.

He almost entered.

Then stopped.

For once, he didn't want to interrupt.

***

Later, he summoned Mrs. Galloway.

“Who is Rachel Vance?”

The housekeeper frowned.

“A new maid, sir.”

“I know that.”

He looked toward the staircase.

“What does she do with Sophia?”

Mrs. Galloway hesitated.

“Talks to her.”

“About what?”

“Ordinary things.”

Kalin stared.

“Ordinary things?”

“Yes, sir.”

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then whispered:

“I'd forgotten she might want ordinary things.”

***

Meanwhile, Dario watched the upstairs hallway through the security system.

He had noticed Sophia becoming more confident.

She walked farther.

Spoke more often.

And no longer flinched every time someone entered her room.

That worried him.

Not because he cared about her.

Because a frightened child was easier to control.

He removed his phone.

Typed a message.

The maid is teaching the girl to resist.

The reply came quickly.

Then stop the lessons.

Dario looked toward Sophia's room.

May you like

Then smiled.

Gladly.
