Chapter 4 - THE FACILITY WITH LOCKED WINDOWS

The private rehabilitation facility was called Mercy Hills Renewal Center.
Its website showed gardens, prayer circles, and smiling patients.
The reality was darker.
Former residents described locked doors, confiscated phones, forced labor, and religious counseling led by unlicensed staff.
Pastor Vane’s church owned the property through another nonprofit.
Garrick planned to send me there using a false addiction diagnosis.
Once inside, I would have limited contact with attorneys or investigators.
Any protest would be recorded as withdrawal, paranoia, or rebellion.
The ambulance crew waiting downstairs carried paperwork that appeared legitimate.
Rebecca blocked the transfer.
Hospital security detained the two men after discovering their credentials were fake.
One was a maintenance employee from New Covenant Fellowship.
The other worked for Garrick’s construction company.
Inside the ambulance, police found restraints, sedatives, and a video camera.
They also found a prepared intake statement.
Patient arrived agitated, drug-seeking, and delusional. Claims husband and church are conspiring against her.
They had written my behavior before they even reached my room.
The attempted removal triggered immediate arrests.
Miriam was taken into custody at the house.
Garrick disappeared.
Pastor Vane canceled his Sunday service and claimed a medical emergency.
Federal agents searched Mercy Hills.
They found twelve residents living under questionable guardianship orders.
Several had signed over property or retirement accounts to church-controlled trusts.
One elderly widow believed she was attending a three-day grief retreat.
She had been inside for seven months.
Another woman was brought there after accusing a church elder of assault.
Her family had been told she suffered a psychotic breakdown.
The center was not designed to heal people.
It was designed to discredit and contain them.
In a locked administrative office, investigators discovered files labeled by financial value.
HOMEOWNER.
BUSINESS OWNER.
INSURANCE SETTLEMENT.
INHERITANCE.
My file was marked FOUNDATION LIABILITY.
Pastor Vane wanted me confined because I could connect the charity fraud to Garrick and Miriam.
Garrick wanted me confined because divorce would require financial disclosure.
Celeste wanted me confined because my existence complicated the future Garrick had promised her.
The three of them had different motives.
The same locked door served all of them.
Miriam requested a meeting.
Rebecca advised against it.
I agreed under recorded conditions.
Miriam entered the county interview room wearing an orange jail uniform.
Without silk, jewelry, or church lighting, she looked smaller.
She sat across from me behind glass.
“This has gone too far,” she said.
“You flushed my medication.”
“I was trying to save you.”
“You threw away sterile dressings.”
“Garrick did that.”
“You watched.”
“You have always been dramatic.”
I looked at her.
“You prepared documents calling me an addict before my surgery.”
Her face changed slightly.
“I did not write them.”
“Celeste did.”
Miriam looked away.
There it was.
Confirmation.
“How long has Garrick been with her?”
“That is not relevant.”
“How long?”
“Almost a year.”
A year.
He began the affair before my diagnosis.
He sat beside me when the surgeon said cancer.
He held my hand during the biopsy.
He promised we would fight together.
Then he returned to a woman helping write the narrative that would destroy me.
“Where is he?” I asked.
“I don’t know.”
“You always know where your son is.”
“He abandoned me.”
For the first time, Miriam’s voice cracked.
Garrick had withdrawn money from several joint accounts and disappeared without helping her.
Pastor Vane had also stopped returning calls.
The woman who spent years teaching me that loyalty meant obedience had discovered what her son’s loyalty was worth.
“Help us find him,” I said.
“Why would I?”
“Because Pastor Vane and Garrick are preparing to blame you.”
“That is not true.”
I placed a document against the glass.
Federal agents had recovered a draft affidavit from Celeste’s laptop.
It described Miriam as the mastermind behind the foundation fraud and the sole person responsible for my medical mistreatment.
Garrick claimed he feared his controlling mother and acted only under pressure.
Pastor Vane claimed Miriam misused church accounts without authorization.
They intended to sacrifice her.
Miriam read the first page.
Her face drained of color.
“My son would never say this.”
“He already did.”
I showed her a message from Garrick to Celeste.
Once Mom takes the fall, Audrey loses credibility and we start over.
Miriam pressed one hand against the glass.
For years, she believed cruelty proved strength.
Now the system she created had chosen her as its next victim.
“Where is he?” I repeated.
She closed her eyes.
“Pastor Vane owns an aviation property near San Marcos.”
“There is a private hangar.”
“Garrick said they could reach Mexico before the warrants expanded.”
Federal agents moved immediately.
The hangar contained Pastor Vane’s jet, two vehicles, cash, church records, and boxes of medical files from Mercy Hills.
The plane had not departed.
A storm grounded private flights across central Texas.
Agents surrounded the property.
Thermal imaging detected four people inside.
Garrick.
Pastor Vane.
Celeste.
And a fourth person lying motionless in a back office.
The fourth person was Carla Simmons, the former bookkeeper.
Garrick had abducted her after learning she possessed recordings.
They planned to force her to reveal where the original files were stored.
Agents entered through the main hangar and roof access.
Pastor Vane surrendered immediately.
Celeste attempted to destroy a laptop by pouring fuel over it.
Garrick dragged Carla toward the plane with a handgun.
The confrontation was captured by a news helicopter.
Millions watched the man who accused his recovering wife of addiction hold a terrified bookkeeper at gunpoint beside a church-owned private jet.
When agents ordered him to release Carla, Garrick shouted that everyone had betrayed him.
His wife.
His mother.
His church.
His employees.
Not once did he mention what he had done to any of them.
Carla drove her heel into his foot and broke free.
Agents tackled Garrick before he reached the aircraft.
The gun skidded across the concrete.
Celeste was arrested.
Pastor Vane was led from the hangar in handcuffs while his own television network broadcast the scene live.
Two days earlier, Garrick had told a congregation I was destroying his life.
Now the world saw him trying to escape with stolen donations, false medical files, and a kidnapped witness.

Their carefully built story did not merely crack.
It collapsed in public.
