Chapter 14 - THE LAST DEBT

Norah hit the floor beside Liam.
For one terrible second, she could not tell where the blood was coming from.
Then she saw the wound.
A bullet had struck his upper arm.
He was conscious.
Breathing.
Terrified.
"Nora?"
"I'm here."
She pressed both hands against the bleeding wound.
"Stay with me."
Around them, federal agents secured the room.
Someone shouted for medical assistance.
Victor had dropped his weapon.
Dominic stood beside the shattered window.
His shoulder was bleeding.
Norah looked up.
"Dominic!"
He turned.
"I'm fine."
"You've been shot!"
"Grazed."
"That is not a medical diagnosis!"
Despite the chaos, he almost smiled.
Then federal agents ordered everyone to the ground.
Victor surrendered.
His guards were arrested.
And the nightmare that had begun with a false $400,000 debt finally started to unravel.
---
Liam underwent surgery that afternoon.
The bullet had damaged muscle but missed major arteries.
His doctors expected him to recover with rehabilitation.
Norah sat beside his hospital bed after the operation.
He looked pale and exhausted.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
She leaned closer.
"For what?"
"For lying about the job. For hiding the files. For dragging you into everything."
Norah brushed his hair away from his forehead.
"You didn't drag me into this. People who wanted to hide their crimes did."
"I thought I could expose them myself."
"I know."
"I thought if I collected enough evidence, I could prove what happened to Mom."
Norah's eyes filled.
Liam looked at her.
"I missed her."
"Me too."
"I just wanted someone to admit that she was right."
Norah took his hand.
"She was right."
They sat quietly.
Then Liam looked toward the window.
"Is Dominic okay?"
"His shoulder will heal."
Liam hesitated.
"He's different than I expected."
Norah smiled faintly.
"He's different than he wants people to believe."
"Do you love him?"
The question caught her off guard.
She looked down at her wedding ring.
It was still in her pocket.
"I think I might."
Liam smiled.
"That's inconvenient."
"You have no idea."
---
Over the following weeks, the Harborlight investigation expanded.
Victor agreed to cooperate after his attorneys reviewed the evidence.
His testimony identified corrupt hospital administrators, fraudulent contractors, and members of the Tarasov organization.
Alexi Tarasov was arrested while attempting to leave the country.
Multiple medical research programs were suspended pending independent investigation.
Patients and families were contacted.
Financial records were preserved.
And victims began receiving legal representation.
The government established a process for reviewing the fraudulent consent forms and research claims.
For the first time in nearly two decades, the people harmed by Harborlight were being heard.
But the investigation also reached Dominic.
His organization had facilitated transactions used by the conspirators.
Some companies had violated financial reporting laws.
Certain managers had knowingly assisted the operation.
Dominic did not deny the evidence.
He hired independent counsel, cooperated through proper legal channels, and began restructuring the businesses he legally controlled.
Several executives resigned.
Others were indicted.
Dominic placed the hospital's ownership interests into an independently supervised trust during the investigation.
He also agreed to relinquish management authority over divisions associated with unlawful activities.
The consequences were substantial.
He lost money.
Influence.
Allies.
And the protection of people who had once feared him.
But he gained something he had never possessed before.
The possibility of building a life that did not depend on fear.
---
Three months after the warehouse confrontation, Norah visited Dominic's estate.
The house looked different.
Several security posts had been removed.
The main gates were open during daylight hours.
Teresa was planting flowers near the entrance.
She looked up.
"Mrs. Russo."
Norah smiled.
"Technically."
Teresa laughed.
"He's in the library."
Norah found Dominic sitting beside the fireplace.
His injured shoulder had healed.
He wore a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
There were legal documents spread across the table.
When he saw her, he stood.
"Norah."
"Hello, Dominic."
For a moment, neither moved.
Then he smiled.
"You look well."
"So do you."
She glanced at the papers.
"More lawyers?"
"More accountants."
"Even worse."
He laughed.
It was a genuine laugh.
Norah had missed it.
Dominic approached cautiously.
"How's Liam?"
"Arguing with his physical therapist. So basically recovered."
"Good."
Silence followed.
Then Norah took a small velvet box from her bag.
Dominic's expression changed.
She placed it on the table.
Inside was his grandmother's ring.
He looked at it.
Then at her.
"You came to return it."
"Yes."
He nodded slowly.
"I understand."
Norah could hear the disappointment in his voice.
She took a breath.
"When you gave me this ring, I was frightened. You told me I had no choice. You told me forever was the only way to keep me safe."
"I remember."
"And you were wrong."
"I know."
She stepped closer.
"I don't want a marriage built on fear."
"Neither do I."
"I don't want a husband who thinks protecting me means controlling me."
Dominic lowered his eyes.
"I don't want to be that man."
Norah picked up the ring.
"Then we need to start again."
He looked up.
"What?"
She smiled through tears.
"Ask me properly."
Dominic stared.
For several seconds, he seemed incapable of speech.
Then he laughed softly.
"You came all this way to make me nervous?"
"Yes."
He stepped closer.
"Norah Hastings, would you consider having dinner with me?"
She pretended to think.
"Will there be armed guards?"
"No."
"Threats?"
"Absolutely not."
"Any discussions about permanent ownership?"
"Never again."
She smiled.
"Then yes."
Dominic exhaled.
Norah placed the ring back inside the box.
"Keep it for now."
"Why?"
"Because if you ever ask me to marry you again, I want it to be a question."
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then nodded.
"It will be."
---
That evening, they went to a small neighborhood restaurant.
No photographers.
No security entourage.
No expensive private room.
They ordered pasta and shared dessert.
They talked about ordinary things.
Liam's rehabilitation.
Norah's work.
Dominic's terrible taste in coffee.
The books she wanted to read.
The places he had never visited without security.
For the first time, neither owed the other anything.
They were simply two people discovering whether they wanted to build a life together.
When Dominic walked her to her car, he stopped beneath a streetlight.
"Can I kiss you?"
Norah smiled.
"You still ask."
"I always will."
She stepped closer.
"Then yes."
He kissed her gently.
When they separated, she rested her forehead against his.
"One more thing."
"What?"
"If we ever do get married again, I want a wedding with normal people."
Dominic raised an eyebrow.
"Define normal."
"No guns under the tables."
"Reasonable."
"No criminal negotiations during the reception."
"Challenging, but possible."
"And my brother gets to make a speech."
Dominic grimaced.
"That may be the most dangerous condition yet."
Norah laughed.
He held her close.
For the first time since meeting him, she felt safe without feeling trapped.
May you like
And that was how she knew the difference between protection and love.
