Chapter 10 - THE HUSBAND WHO LET HER GO

Norah stood in Dominic's study with the photograph in her hand.
Liam was unmistakable.
His hair.
His face.
The scar near his eyebrow.
He was walking through the estate's service entrance beside a man wearing a dark overcoat.
The timestamp showed 11:46 p.m.
Two nights before the wedding.
Norah looked at Dominic.
"Explain."
Dominic examined the image.
"I've never seen this."
"Your security cameras recorded it."
"Then someone concealed the recording."
"Your house. Your men. Your organization."
He looked at her.
"I understand how this appears."
"No. You don't."
She placed the photograph on the desk.
"My brother was here, Dominic. While I was begging you to help him, someone was bringing him through your front door."
Dominic called Grace.
He instructed her to preserve the video and obtain independent confirmation of its timestamp.
Then he summoned Teresa.
The older woman examined the photograph.
Her expression changed.
"I know that coat."
Norah turned.
"Whose?"
"Victor's."
Dominic went very still.
Teresa pointed toward the figure beside Liam.
"He wore that coat to Elena's funeral."
Silence filled the study.
Dominic looked toward the security monitors.
"Find Victor."
Nobody answered.
He called the control room.
No response.
A second call.
Nothing.
Then the estate's main security system shut down.
Every monitor went black.
Dominic swore.
"He's gone."
---
By afternoon, the truth had begun to emerge.
Victor had disappeared.
Several Russo financial accounts had been emptied.
Security footage from the estate had been erased.
Three employees associated with him had also vanished.
Dominic contacted his remaining associates and suspended operations connected to Victor's authority.
But Norah could no longer ignore the central fact.
She had married a man whose organization had been used to endanger her family.
Even if Dominic had not known, she was living inside the machinery that had trapped Liam.
That night, she packed her suitcase.
Dominic found her in the guest bedroom.
He stopped at the doorway.
"Where are you going?"
"Grace offered me a place to stay."
He looked at the suitcase.
"You're safer here."
"Your security chief kidnapped my brother."
"We don't know that he kidnapped him."
"He concealed him. That's enough."
Dominic said nothing.
Norah closed the suitcase.
"I can't investigate this while living under your roof, wondering whether the next person who brings me coffee is reporting to someone else."
"Norah—"
"And I can't keep confusing gratitude with love."
The words hurt them both.
Dominic stepped backward.
She had expected anger.
A command.
A reminder about forever.
Instead, he asked, "Do you want a divorce?"
Norah froze.
He reached into his jacket.
He removed an envelope.
Inside were legal documents.
A separation agreement.
Prepared by his attorney.
No financial demands.
No restrictions on employment.
No claims against her property.
And a provision guaranteeing independent security assistance if she requested it, without requiring marriage.
Norah stared at the papers.
"When did you do this?"
"After the motel."
"Why?"
"Because I realized that if you stayed with me only because you were frightened of leaving, then I wasn't protecting you."
His voice dropped.
"I was doing exactly what my father taught me to do."
Norah looked up.
Dominic continued.
"I told you the Russo name was yours forever. I was wrong to decide that for you."
Her eyes filled with tears.
He held out the envelope.
"You can leave. You can divorce me. You can keep working. And I will still help find Liam."
"Why?"
He looked at her with an expression she had never seen before.
"Because loving someone doesn't mean keeping them."
The room became painfully quiet.
Norah wanted to answer.
Wanted to say something brave, something simple, something that could make the confusion disappear.
But she couldn't.
Not yet.
She picked up her suitcase.
Dominic stepped aside.
As she passed, he whispered, "Be careful."
She stopped.
"You too."
Then she walked out.
---
At Grace's farmhouse, Norah spent two days reviewing patient records.
The USB drive contained more information than they had realized.
Many of the payments were coded with medical abbreviations.
Norah recognized patterns the accountants had missed.
Seven recurring identifiers appeared in the records.
Not patient numbers.
Not account numbers.
Shipping classifications.
Each corresponded to a different category of fraudulent research activity.
One classification was associated with forged consent forms.
Another with falsified diagnoses.
Another with medical equipment billed but never delivered.
The seventh referred to people transported through the Harborlight logistics network.
Norah's hands went cold.
The cargo ship threatened by the Tarasovs was not merely a punishment.
It was part of the operation.
She called Grace into the room.
"Look at this."
Grace examined the screen.
"That's enough to establish a criminal conspiracy."
"Maybe more."
Norah opened a list of scheduled shipments.
One was planned for Friday.
The destination was listed only as Dock 17.
And beside the shipment was a name.
LIAM HASTINGS.
Norah stared.
Then reached for her phone.
She had not called Dominic since leaving.
Her thumb hovered over his number.
Finally, she pressed it.
He answered immediately.
"Norah?"
Her voice trembled.
"I found Liam."
A pause.
"Where?"
"Dock 17. Friday."
Dominic's voice changed.
"Listen carefully. Do not go there."
"Why?"
"Because I just received a message from Victor."
Norah gripped the phone.
"What did he say?"
Dominic took a breath.
"He offered to exchange your brother for the Harborlight evidence."
"And?"
May you like
"He wants both of us."
