Chapter 13 - THE BRIDE WHO WALKED INTO THE TRAP

Friday arrived under a gray sky.
Norah dressed in dark jeans, a plain sweater, and comfortable shoes.
She left her wedding ring on the dresser.
Then reconsidered.
She picked it up.
For a moment, she held it in her palm.
The diamond caught the morning light.
When Dominic first placed it on her finger, it had represented fear.
Now it represented something more complicated.
A promise he had broken.
An apology he had made.
And a choice she had not yet decided to make.
She slipped it into her pocket.
---
Grace coordinated the federal operation from an undisclosed location.
Investigators had obtained authorization to intervene if the exchange revealed an immediate danger to Liam or Norah.
They had also secured warrants related to Victor's financial operations.
But the warehouse was surrounded by private property, shipping containers, and multiple exits.
Victor had chosen the location carefully.
Norah understood that getting inside would be easy.
Getting everyone out might be impossible.
Dominic wanted to accompany her.
She refused.
"If Victor sees you, he'll use Liam against you."
"He'll use Liam against you anyway."
"Then give us another option."
Dominic was silent.
Norah approached him.
"You promised to trust me."
"I do."
"Then prove it."
He studied her for a long moment.
Finally, he nodded.
"I'll stay where the investigators need me."
She touched his hand.
"Thank you."
---
At noon, Norah entered Dock 17.
The warehouse smelled of diesel fuel, saltwater, and old wood.
A man searched her bag.
Another directed her toward a metal staircase.
Victor waited in an office overlooking the loading area.
He wore a gray suit.
His hair was neatly combed.
He looked exactly like the polite, efficient man who had once escorted her into Dominic's home.
"Mrs. Russo."
Norah remained standing.
"Where's Liam?"
"Always direct."
"Where is he?"
Victor gestured toward a door.
Two men brought Liam inside.
His face was bruised, but he was walking.
Norah struggled not to run toward him.
"Nora," he whispered.
She smiled through tears.
"Hey, troublemaker."
He managed a weak laugh.
Victor pointed to the table.
"The drive."
Norah placed a small encrypted storage device on the surface.
"The files are there."
"And the authorization keys?"
"Release Liam."
Victor shook his head.
"You don't understand how negotiations work."
"I understand exactly how they work. You need something I have."
He studied her.
Then smiled.
"You sound like Dominic."
"That isn't the insult you think it is."
Victor leaned closer.
"Your husband has spent his entire life pretending to be better than his father."
"Then you should stop trying to be worse."
The smile vanished.
For a moment, Norah thought he might strike her.
Instead, he laughed.
"You really are fearless."
"No," she answered. "I'm frightened all the time."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because fear doesn't get to decide what kind of sister I am."
Liam looked at her.
His eyes filled with tears.
Victor turned toward the computer.
He inserted the drive.
A password prompt appeared.
Norah entered the first code.
Then another.
The encrypted archive opened.
Victor scanned the folders.
His expression changed.
"These aren't the originals."
"They're verified copies."
"I said originals."
"Those are with federal investigators."
Victor stood.
For the first time, he lost his composure.
"You lied to me."
"You kidnapped my brother."
He grabbed her arm.
Norah pulled away.
Then Liam spoke.
"Victor, stop."
Victor turned.
Liam's voice was steady.
"You don't need these files anymore."
Victor frowned.
"What?"
"The transfers are already traceable. The patient records have been preserved. The insurance companies know."
"You're bluffing."
Liam shook his head.
"You lost control of this operation months ago. You're just the last person who hasn't admitted it."
Victor stared at him.
Then he pulled a gun.
Norah moved instinctively between them.
"No!"
Victor froze.
Outside, a truck engine roared.
A crash echoed through the loading bay.
Someone shouted.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
Victor backed toward the office window.
Panic flashed across his face.
He looked at Norah.
"You brought them."
She did not deny it.
"You can still surrender."
Victor laughed bitterly.
"Surrender? To spend the rest of my life listening to lawyers explain why my brother gets to keep everything?"
Dominic's voice came from the doorway.
"You can have the inheritance."
Everyone turned.
Dominic stood with his hands visible.
He was unarmed.
Norah's heart stopped.
Victor stared.
"What?"
"The businesses. The estate. Whatever you think our father owed you."
Dominic stepped forward.
"None of it is worth another life."
Victor's gun trembled.
"You don't mean that."
"I do."
"Then why didn't you give it to me years ago?"
"Because you never told me who you were."
Victor's face twisted.
For the first time, Norah saw something beneath the cruelty.
A wounded boy who had turned rejection into hatred.
Dominic spoke again.
"I didn't choose our father. I didn't choose what happened to our mothers. But I am choosing what happens now."
Victor lowered the weapon slightly.
Then one of his guards moved behind Liam.
Norah saw the gun before anyone else did.
"Liam, DOWN!"
The shot shattered the window.
Dominic lunged forward.
Liam fell.
Norah screamed.
May you like
And the warehouse erupted into chaos.
