Chapter 9 - THE BOARDROOM BELONGED TO ME

The emergency board meeting took place twelve days after Oliver's birth.

I attended remotely from my attorney's office.

My doctors had warned me to rest.

I listened.

But I also knew that protecting my son required making decisions I'd avoided for years.

The boardroom appeared on my screen.

Julian sat at the head of the table.

Sienna wasn't present.

Daniel Whitaker, the company's chief financial officer, looked exhausted.

Margaret sat beside me.

Samuel Price joined as an independent financial adviser.

The meeting began.

Julian smiled tightly.

"Khloe, I'm glad you're recovering."

I looked at him.

"Thank you."

He leaned back.

"I assume this is about our personal situation."

"No."

His smile faltered.

"This meeting concerns company governance."

I shared the audit summary.

The room fell silent.

Julian stared at the screen.

"Where did you get that?"

"Company records."

"You had no right—"

"I'm the controlling voting beneficiary under the Bennett family trust, and the trustees have exercised their rights under the governing documents."

Julian stopped.

I continued.

"An independent review has identified millions in potentially unauthorized expenditures."

One board member leaned forward.

"Julian, is this accurate?"

Julian looked furious.

"These were strategic investments."

I clicked to the next page.

A photograph appeared.

Sienna wearing a diamond necklace at her birthday party.

Beside it was a company invoice.

CUSTOM JEWELRY PROCUREMENT — $184,000.

Silence.

Another photograph.

Sienna boarding a private jet.

Beside it, a company travel expense.

EXECUTIVE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT — $96,000.

A third photograph.

The ballroom.

The flowers.

The orchestra.

CLIENT RELATIONS EVENT — $312,000.

Julian went pale.

I looked directly into the camera.

"These expenses require explanation and independent verification."

He stood.

"You're humiliating me!"

I shook my head.

"No, Julian."

My voice remained steady.

"You did that yourself."

The board voted to place him on administrative leave pending investigation, under the company's bylaws.

His access to discretionary company accounts was suspended.

An interim executive was appointed.

And for the first time since our marriage, Julian Caldwell no longer controlled the company he'd treated as his personal kingdom.

He stared into the camera.

"Khloe, please."

I looked at him.

"You left me on a highway because you thought I was powerless."

Silence.

May you like

Then I said:

"You were wrong."
