Chapter 13 - THE DAY OLIVER CAME HOME

Oliver came home after seven weeks in the NICU.

I carried him through the front door wrapped in Evelyn's knitted blanket.

Ethan followed with the diaper bag.

Margaret had sent flowers.

Professor friends from my old business school had sent books.

The living room was filled with sunlight.

I looked down at my son.

"Welcome home, sweetheart."

He slept.

Completely unimpressed.

I laughed.

Then cried.

That evening, I sat beside his crib.

The house was quiet.

No arguments.

No phone calls from Julian.

No pressure to attend parties.

No expectation that I should smile through humiliation.

Just the soft sound of Oliver breathing.

I looked at him.

"You're going to have a good life."

His fingers moved.

I smiled.

"Not a perfect one."

I touched his tiny hand.

"But a good one."

The divorce proceedings continued.

Julian requested parenting time.

The court considered the circumstances, including the abandonment incident and the child's medical needs, and established a cautious, professionally guided arrangement focused on Oliver's safety and welfare.

I didn't try to erase Julian from Oliver's life.

But I refused to pretend what happened was harmless.

My attorney helped me establish clear boundaries.

Julian had to demonstrate reliability.

Respect medical guidance.

Follow court orders.

And understand that being a father required more than biological connection.

One afternoon, he saw Oliver during a supervised visit.

He stared at the tiny boy.

Then began crying.

"I'm sorry."

The supervisor remained nearby.

Julian looked at me.

"Khloe."

I shook my head gently.

"Don't make this about us."

He swallowed.

I continued.

"Be the father he deserves."

May you like

Julian looked down at Oliver.

For once, he didn't argue.
