Chapter 4 - THE COMPANY HE THOUGHT WAS HIS

Julian Caldwell believed he owned everything.

The mansion.

The cars.

The private jet.

The luxury development company bearing his name.

But there was something he'd forgotten.

Caldwell Industries had not begun with Julian.

It had begun with Khloe's father, Thomas Bennett.

Thomas had been a brilliant engineer and real-estate developer.

When Julian married Khloe, Thomas invested heavily in Julian's struggling company.

He provided capital.

Land.

Banking relationships.

And the credibility Julian lacked.

But Thomas had insisted on one condition.

The majority voting shares would remain in a family trust benefiting Khloe.

Julian could serve as CEO.

He could manage operations.

He could receive a generous salary.

But he did not control the company.

For six years, Khloe had allowed him to act as though he did.

She rarely attended board meetings.

She signed routine documents after reviewing them.

She avoided public disagreements.

Julian mistook her restraint for ignorance.

He had no idea that before becoming a wife, Khloe had earned an MBA and worked in corporate restructuring.

She understood financial statements.

Shareholder rights.

Board governance.

And exactly how to remove a CEO.

On the second morning after her surgery, Khloe called her attorney.

Margaret Ellis answered immediately.

"Khloe?"

"I need you to bring the trust documents."

A pause.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"You're recovering from major surgery."

"I know."

Margaret's voice softened.

"Then let's do this carefully. Your health comes first."

Khloe closed her eyes.

"I want to protect my son."

"We will."

"Julian abandoned me on the highway."

Silence.

Then Margaret whispered:

"Oh, Khloe."

Khloe continued.

"He knew I was bleeding."

Margaret took a breath.

"Have you told the police?"

"Yes. The hospital helped me make a report."

"Good."

Khloe looked toward the NICU corridor.

"And Margaret?"

"Yes?"

"Find out how much company money he's spent on Sienna."

Margaret's voice changed.

May you like

"Why?"

"Because I don't think he's been paying for those parties himself."
