Chapter 8 - THE CABIN BESIDE THE LAKE

The photograph showed a cabin near Lake Geneva.
Alessandro recognized the property.
It had belonged to his grandmother.
The family sold it years earlier.
Or so he believed.
Investigators discovered the property had been purchased through a trust connected to Nora.
We drove there with police assistance.
I insisted on coming.
Alessandro argued.
I argued back.
Eventually, he sighed.
“You're impossible.”
I folded my arms.
“You threw a coffee cup at a wall.”
He almost smiled.
“Fair point.”
The cabin stood among tall pine trees.
A blue porch light glowed above the door.
My heart pounded.
We approached carefully.
Then a small voice came from inside.
“Daddy?”
Alessandro froze.
“Sofia?”
The door opened.
A little girl with dark curls stood in the doorway.
She wore pink pajamas.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daddy!”
Alessandro ran.
He dropped to his knees and caught her in his arms.
I turned away.
Some moments were too private to watch.
Then a woman appeared behind Sofia.
Brown hair.
Blue raincoat.
A faint scar beneath her chin.
