Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LISTEN

Alessandro began visiting Rosie's regularly.
At first, he came for coffee.
Then dinner.
Then breakfast.
Eventually, Rosa started setting aside his favorite slice of pie.
He always paid exactly what he owed.
Plus a reasonable tip.
No hundred-dollar bills for three-dollar cups.
He also began asking about my mother.
Not casually.
Not politely.
He remembered her appointments.
Her medication changes.
The days when she struggled to breathe.
One afternoon, he offered to pay her medical bills.
I refused.
He looked surprised.
“Why?”
“Because I don't want to owe you.”
He considered that.
Then nodded.
“All right.”
I stared.
“That's it?”
He smiled.
“That's it.”
A week later, he asked whether he could help me appeal an insurance denial by connecting me with an independent patient advocate.
I agreed.
Because this time, he wasn't trying to solve my life with money.
He was offering information.
A choice.
May you like
And respect.
Slowly, I began to trust him.
