Chapter 10 - A Sunrise on Lake Michigan

================================================================================

One year later, the warm summer sunrise painted the deep blue waters of Lake Michigan in breathtaking shades of gold, rose, and amber.

On the rugged coastal bluff where an old, collapsed fisherman’s shed had once stood, a magnificent cedar-and-stone lakefront home now rose proudly against the pines.

The wide wrap-around porch was filled with the sweet scent of blooming lavender, roasted coffee, and fresh blueberry pancakes.

Down on the soft sand beach, nine-year-old Brandon was laughing joyfully, showing his six-year-old sister Emma how to skip smooth flat stones across the gentle waves. Emma’s bright pink sneakers kicked up sand as she giggled, holding her beloved plush bear under one arm while Alexander’s mastiff, Brutus, bounded happily beside them.

Brandon was strong, healthy, and radiant; Emma was blooming with the fearless joy of a child who knew she was cherished.

I stood on the sunlit porch, wearing a soft cream linen sundress, holding a warm ceramic mug between both hands.

Strong, warm arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind.

Alexander leaned down, resting his chin against my shoulder, his familiar scent of cedar and clean rain wrapping around me like an unbreakable shield.

“They’re getting good at skipping stones,” Alexander murmured softly, pressing a tender kiss against the side of my neck.

“Brandon says he’s going to build a wooden boat just like my grandfather’s,” I smiled, leaning back into his solid chest, feeling the deep, steady rhythm of his heartbeat against my shoulder.

Alexander reached into his linen shirt, pulling out the heavy silver chain around his neck.

The antique mariner’s compass caught the morning sunlight, the sapphire at true north gleaming like a brilliant star.

Alexander took the medallion and gently looped it over my head, letting the cool, heavy silver settle over my heart.

“Twenty years ago, I promised I would come back for this compass, and I promised I would come back for you,” Alexander whispered, his slate-gray eyes shining with an ocean of profound, eternal devotion.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small velvet box, and opened it to reveal a flawless emerald-cut diamond ring flanked by two delicate platinum crescent moons.

He took my trembling left hand into his.

“Clara Evans… will you make this home complete? Will you marry me?”

Tears of pure, unburdened happiness spilled over my lashes as a radiant smile broke across my face.

“Yes, Alex,” I choked out, wrapping my arms around his neck. “A thousand times, yes.”

From down on the beach, Brandon and Emma saw us embracing. They let out loud, happy cheers, sprinting up the wooden sand dune stairs two at a time, throwing their arms around both of our waists.

Alexander scooped both children into his arms effortlessly, lifting them high into the golden morning air as their laughter echoed out over the vast, shimmering lake.
