Chapter 7 - The Husband's Cowardly Plea

By 2:00 PM, the story had broken across the Washington metropolitan area.

News helicopters circled the Arlington estate, broadcasting live aerial footage of federal agents carrying boxes of evidence from the Vance residence. Headlines on major news networks blared:

‘Prominent Virginia Educator and Civic Leader Arrested in Serial Drugging and Surveillance Scandal; Multiple Victims Identified.’

Inside the private consultation room of Douglas Vance’s legal office in Tysons Corner, I sat drinking warm tea, reviewing the asset protection petitions Douglas had prepared.

The door opened, and David walked in.

He looked completely broken. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair unwashed, his eyes bloodshot and swollen from hours of crying. He looked nothing like the proud, rising corporate manager I had married two years ago.

“Rebecca…” David choked out, dropping onto both knees beside my chair, reaching out to grasp my hands with trembling fingers.

I pulled my hands back smoothly, resting them in my lap.

“Don't touch me, David.”

David buried his face in his hands, sobbing uncontrollably. “Rebecca, please… I didn't know! I swear to God on my life, I had no idea what my father was doing in the basement! I didn't know about the cameras! I didn't know about the pills!”

“You didn't know because you chose not to look, David,” I answered, my voice steady, cold, and unyielding. “For two years, I came to you. I told you your father cornered me in the kitchen. I told you he made comments about my body. I told you he made me feel unsafe in my own home.”

David looked up, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. “I thought you were just sensitive! My parents built this family on prestige… I couldn't accept that my father was a monster! I was trying to protect our marriage!”

“You weren't protecting our marriage, David,” I replied, looking directly into his eyes. “You were protecting your inheritance. You were protecting your comfortable position at the country club. You sacrificed my safety and your sister’s dignity so you wouldn't have to confront the rot in your own bloodline.”

David reached into his pocket and pulled out his platinum wedding band, placing it on the table.

“Rebecca, we can leave Virginia,” David pleaded desperately. “We can sell the condo in Alexandria. We can move to California, start over, change our names… I will spend every single day making this up to you! Just don't file for divorce! Don't testify against my family!”

Douglas Vance stepped forward, sliding a thick manila folder directly in front of David.

“Mr. Vance,” Douglas said with razor-sharp legal precision. “Here is the verified financial audit of your joint accounts. Over the past twenty-four months, you knowingly co-signed three wire transfers from the family trust to Arthur’s offshore shell company in Belize—the exact account used to purchase the controlled substances.”

David froze, the blood draining from his face.

“You have two choices, David,” Douglas continued. “Sign the uncontested divorce decree, surrender all claims to the Alexandria property and Rebecca’s personal equity, or Prosecutor Miller will name you as a co-conspirator in federal pharmaceutical smuggling by tomorrow morning.”

David stared at the pen on the table. His hands shook so violently he could barely hold it.

With a broken, defeated whimper, David signed his name on every single line, forfeiting his marriage, his pride, and his hollow dynasty with a few strokes of black ink.
