Chapter 7 - The Night the Mansion Went Dark

Three months after Grace’s birth, Margaret violated the protective order.
She returned to the mansion through a maintenance tunnel connected to the guesthouse.
I had forgotten the tunnel existed.
She had not.
The property remained under court control, but much of the evidence had already been removed.
Margaret entered my office and attempted to destroy the central security server.
She believed the recordings lived only there.
They had been mirrored to multiple locations the night I activated the black token.
When alarms triggered, she disabled electricity to the west wing.
The mansion went dark.
Security found her beside the server room carrying lighter fluid, forged account documents, and Emily’s passport.
Why the passport remained in her possession, no one understood until investigators examined the documents.
Margaret planned to create evidence that Emily had voluntarily left the country after abandoning Grace.
She wanted to preserve the narrative even after losing custody.
Police arrested her inside the house she once controlled.
As officers led her outside, she saw me near the driveway.
“You chose that woman over your own mother.”
“No.”
I looked at the passport in the evidence bag.
“You forced me to choose between truth and your version of family.”
“She will leave you.”
“She has the right.”
“You will be alone.”
“Then I will learn to live without owning anyone.”
Margaret stared at me as though I had spoken a foreign language.
Control had been her only proof that people would remain.

Without it, she had no idea what love looked like.
