Chapter 9 - ADRIAN WITHOUT A TITLE

Two years later, I saw Adrian again.

Not by choice.

A continuing legal education conference in Manhattan.

He stood near the coffee station.

No executive badge.

No entourage.

He worked now for a mid-sized consulting company in Philadelphia.

Not leadership.

He had completed court-mandated and company-related intervention programs.

Paid support.

Maintained supervised, then gradually expanded contact with Lucía according to court orders and Rosa’s agreements.

He looked at me.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

We stood awkwardly.

Then:

“I read about Open Door.”

“Okay.”

“It’s good.”

“Thank you.”

He looked older.

So did I.

“Rosa sends me pictures.”

I said nothing.

“Lucía likes dinosaurs.”

“Most intelligent people do.”

He smiled.

Then the smile disappeared.

“I used to think Rosa ruined my career.”

I waited.

“Then I thought you did.”

“And now?”

He looked toward the window.

“I kept expecting someone else to be responsible because I couldn't tolerate the idea that I had built the mechanism myself.”

That was close to accountability.

He continued:

“I was afraid of losing everything I had worked for.”

“So you threatened someone with less power.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because it worked.”

Honest.

Ugly.

Useful.

“Until it didn't.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

“Do you forgive me?”

I thought.

“I don't know.”

He nodded.

No argument.

Progress.

Then he asked:

“Did you ever really love me?”

I smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

“That’s worse.”

“I know.”

Because villains are easier if we never loved them.

Real life is more inconvenient.

I picked up my coffee.

“Take care of your daughter.”

“I’m trying.”

“Good.”

Then I walked away.

No dramatic ending.

No collapse.

May you like

He was not my unfinished business anymore.
