Chapter 5 - ADRIAN’S MOTHER

Adrian’s mother called me on Sunday.

Margaret Cole was sixty-eight.

Elegant.

Former judge’s daughter.

Charity board veteran.

She had always treated me with polite condescension.

I answered.

“Evelyn.”

“Margaret.”

“You canceled the venue.”

“Yes.”

“You might have told me.”

“Adrian could.”

She ignored that.

“I understand there has been an unfortunate accusation.”

“Several.”

“Please don't be clever.”

“I’m not.”

She sighed.

“Men in demanding positions make mistakes.”

“So do women.”

“This is different.”

“Why?”

“He has a career.”

There it was.

Rosa’s exact problem reduced to a sentence.

Margaret continued:

“That girl should never have allowed herself to become involved with her employer.”

I became still.

“Allowed herself?”

“She is an adult.”

“So is Adrian.”

“Yes, but—”

“No.”

I interrupted.

“You don't get to give him more adulthood because he has more money.”

Silence.

Margaret’s voice sharpened.

“He told me you were always ideological.”

I laughed.

“Adrian was threatening a pregnant employee with immigration consequences.”

“That is not what he told me.”

“Then ask why he didn’t tell you what was recorded.”

She went quiet.

Then:

“Was he really the father?”

“Ask him.”

“You know.”

“Yes.”

“Evelyn.”

“What?”

“Please.”

First sincere word.

“Is he?”

“Yes.”

Margaret began crying.

I felt sorry for her.

I did.

But pity does not create obligations.

She whispered:

“The merger will be destroyed.”

“Maybe.”

“Adrian has worked his entire life.”

“So has Rosa.”

“That is not comparable.”

And there, sympathy ended.

“Goodbye, Margaret.”

---

Three days later, Margaret did something unexpected.

She contacted Rosa’s lawyer.

Not to threaten.

To give information.

Adrian had a storage box at his parents’ Connecticut home.

Old phones.

Laptops.

Documents.

Margaret had found it after talking to him.

One laptop contained backups from the years Teresa worked for him.

Margaret turned it over through counsel.

Why?

Her statement was simple.

“I cannot ask other women to protect my son from evidence.”

That did not erase her earlier attitude.

But it mattered.

People can change direction without becoming heroes.

The laptop contained messages Adrian thought were gone.

One to his friend:

Teresa gets emotional when cornered. I’ll give her a reason to leave.

Another:

Rosa is easier. She needs the job.

My hands shook when Naomi eventually told me.

Not because the evidence surprised me.

May you like

Because I had planned to marry the man who wrote it.
